View Full Version : Looking for Telnet tutorial

Okay, I finally did it, got up my courage, and tried to telnet into my account. (Having first discovered that the built-in win95 telnet was missing from my puter, and so downloading EasyTerm from aracnoid.com.) Tween the program's help file and FQ's user manual, I *think* I logged into my account okay . . . but then I got lost.
I was trying to test a cgi script, and used the command TeRRa had suggested ($perl -c scriptname.cgi), replacing scriptname with the name of the script, and I got some strange "bash -c not supported" type message back.
Okay, so I'm thinking I need to get to where the script actually is before I try that.
Problem is, I have no clue how to navigate or anything like that in Telnet.
I have been searching for Telnet tutorials online, but haven't found anything remotely helpful.
Can someone please suggest a good resource? Or tell me what commands I need to know to tide me over until I can afford a book or something?
Thanks,
Bekariso (frustrated)

Easiest way is type help at the command line. This will display a list of commands available.
BTW - don't type the "$" - when Terra types that, he is showing the prompt, similar to C:\> in dos http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
Hope this helps http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
PS - navigating is similar to dos. You can use cd to change directory, dir to get a directory listing, etc. Many of the commands are the same. Just remember to always use / instead of \.

Here's an "at a glance" reference to some of the common commands http://www.hawken.edu/help/linux.html
Also note: when searching for help... you may have better luck looking for "linux commands" or 'Begginners Linux" etc rather then telnet items....

I'll write a short Telnet tutorial with password protection for FutureQuest. (if they allow me to do so)
<grin>
Justin recently finished one for pw protection (he's waiting for me to get off my duff and add it to aota.net which will be done today)
Any/ALL tutorials are more then welcomed! I'd like to get AOTA.net built up obviously. When someone submits a tutorial the links/credits etc are placed accordingly and your sent a great big thank you http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
Del has also written one for the EZ-MLM mailing lists... I'm working on that one now and should have it up on aota.net tonight http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
If you're serious about a Telnet reference I'll hold off on starting one.... just let me know. I was planning to try and compile a list of common commands and some short "how tos" for various tasks... but if someone else is willing... I'm more then willing to let them go for it http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks

Thanks everyone! These links look like they'll be a great help. I used to really like DOS -- in fact, though I kind of "grew up" with computers, I kept using DOS rather than Win 3.x whenever I could, and so skipped right to Win95. So I think once I get the basic commands down (and the references you all offered should help immensely with that), this won't be a problem.
I have learned more from dealing with this one lame script . . . http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif I will make it work! It will not defeat me!
Mwahaha!!! (Okay, you've caught me, I've been spending time de-stressing with cheesy old Final Fantasy 3 RPG lately . . . once the gov't sends the tax refund, we're going to invest in FF7!! Woohoo!!)
Again, thanks everyone! Your help is hugely appreciated! http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

Leafwind (and hearts), you might like the book "UNIX for DOS users". It explains how to get around a UNIX-based system by comparison with a DOS-based one; e.g., "ls" in UNIX is similar to "dir" in DOS. It's pretty helpful if you're used to DOS but new to UNIX.
Apologies that I can't recall the author's name or publisher, but do know the author's name starts with an A. It's on my shelf at work; I'll edit this message and put in the names tomorrow.
OK, it's tomorrow (already http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif ).
