The general release is out. This is a mySQL based discussion board. Anyone running it?

One of the 'joys' of WWWThreads 3 is that it uses it's own Perl Module to run, and another module from another guy (Alex from Gossamer-Threads.com). The proper way of installing modules is via root access, which only Andrew has (for good reason). In order to install in on FQuest (on a per user basis) each user would have to install those modules in their own space, as I imagine it wouldn't be worth Andrew's time/energy to have to update the modules every time a user wanted to upgrade their forum.

Although the author may have changed that practice already, but I'm not sure.

Just what I thought I found when reading through it's source code

I was checking my referer log and ran across this message. Although PERL modules are mostly installed as the root user, you can also install both PERL modules for WWWThreads in the same directory as your normal PERL scripts. This is actually the default way to install WWWThreads. So you don't need root if you can install normal cgi scripts without it. Just thought I would clear that one up.

Hey benson, when ya make it online, hit me on ICQ? please?

and as for this forum thing? Does this guy Scream mean you don't have to use MYSQYL?

got confused on this issue.

hmmm.. fascinating.. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif this guy Scream seems to be looking out for his project.. I haven't checked out your site yet, but as for your interest in this thread i will assume you are the originator? And if so, then this is a cool representation of how you believe in what ya got. *impressed* .. going to wwwthreads.org http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

---- very interesting ---

hey Deb, have ya checked this out? This is a neat little forum. (or should I say huge?) This has some cool features too!

That is kinda fun about the private messages to other users! and the Flat thread.. I hit the button, and there was more to see.

It loaded fast.. or was that because there were so few posts?

IT was fun.. kinda like a new toy, buttons to push.. hehehe.

and moderator options.. I liked the ability to set a thread to expire. (although.. i don't know how useful this would be.. but I liked it! http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

I think this is worth some looking into, and this guy Scream, he seems to really look out for his product, which tells me that he would be of good support, and seems less arrogant than that guy over there at the UBB.. heheheh.

I don't have a clue about MYSQL.. or whatever techie things he would talk about, but I feel this is worth a good consideration. I was impressed, and I didn't think nothing could top the UBB as far as how it looked. (I am not gonna say for how it is coded.. hehehe.)

Deb,(or Andrew) when ya got the time, can ya check it out and share with us your thoughts on this?

Way to go Scream! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

It certainly looks like a script worth looking further into http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

I think the reason we can not do this right now is best explained in this thread http://www.aota.net/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000183.html

We've got to remain focussed on the upgrades/move/ssl right now... I've a feeling come April all kinds of the 'smaller' tasks will come quickly and abundantly -- but Feb/March are loaded with a small amount of HUGE tasks so we can not 'explore' too much right now.

We've been tossing around ideas daily for all kinds of things like the forums and auto responders and search scripts and the mailing lists etc... The CNC will light up quickly after we get over this hurdle http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Hiya Scream

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I hadn't really got the chance yet to play with 3.0, beyond reading the code. I know I was pretty happy with the regular DB hash version though http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif Part of the reason everyone is curious about mySQL is that not all FQuest accounts have it, it's only available in the Gold package and above (I think it's the Gold package).

Just for general knowledge, Scream is indeed the fellow responsible for coding WWWThreads. Be kind, he's done a lot of work http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Glad I could help clear it up. Hopefully over time WWWThreads will gain in popularity. Just a side note, if anyone has any ideas for features, hop over to the demo/support board at www.wwwthreads.org (http://www.wwwthreads.org) and post them on the feature wishlist. Always on the lookout for new features to put in upcoming releases.

MySQL is required to run WWWThreads. That was the main thing behind writing 3.0 was to use a SQL database for reliabilty and speed. Although currently it only runs on MySQL, there are several projects going on to port to different SQL servers, such as SyBase, Microsoft SQL, PostGres, and a few more.
