Just to let you know that they got good services.
One question?
What are the effects of using a domain.com
or domain.net? would it effect the performance of the site? Is it worth going for a .Net domain if the domain.com is already taken? or is it better to choose another domain.com name (even if it doesnt sound as good)?
thanks for your help
What are the effects of using a domain.com or domain.net?
The only difference is what you would be advertising as your URL. The general public tend to assume a .com address for business but since the variety and amount of domain names has grown so much even that is becoming less of an issue.
would it effect the performance of the site?
No difference whatsoever with performance in regards to any tld.
Is it worth going for a .Net domain if the domain.com is already taken?
If the name is appropriate for your web site and you want it, then yes.
or is it better to choose another domain.com name (even if it doesnt sound as good)?
If it doesn't sound as good, take the .net
Hope this helps

i can't speak for msie as i don't use it hardly ever..
but in Netscape, you can type it the name for example "futurequest", but default it looks for .com and if it is net, it won't find it.
not that this is some big deal, but something i have observed.

Heh I've an AV enhanced IE...
If I type in "futurequest" it takes me to AltaVista and searches for futurequest
It's all a matter of personal settings and versions...

A little minor hacking to the registry is all it takes http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I use IE4 and it tries (assuming %1 is the typed string):
%1.com
%1.net
%1.org
%1.edu
www.%1.com
www.%1.net
www.%1.org
www.%1.edu
?%1
The ? is the trigger to tell IE to search for the keyword following the ?. You can also tell it which engine to use - I set mine to Infoseek, but ever since they started trying to look like Yahoo I use AV more often now http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
Otherwise, if you can get a .com get it. If not, I'm not hurting for traffic at vdj.net (although I do get a lot of ppl trying vdj.com first). If they want to see what your site has to offer then the URL doesn't matter (just so it's not like http://www.geocities.com/Some/UnGodly/Long/Case/Sensitive/URL)
But if you can, get all 3 (.com, .net, and .org) http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Yahoo, AV, they all stink! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif www.google.com (http://www.google.com) is way better. Google also tells you how to set your browser's default search (eg if it can't find futurequest it will search google)

Google is WAY the best! No question about that http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Heh, reading that thread makes me glad to be a Mac user. I use Sherlock: built into the OS, no load time, no useless content. Just good, ol' powerful searching.
