I am a newbie so please bear with me. Their "easy" 5 minute install has not been as straighforward like i expected. :confuz:

1. i downloaded and extracted the wordpress file

2. created a new database with futurequest MySQL -- xnewgenpop-blog (presumably correctly ...just clicked create new database in the MySQL Management page)

3. Opened (in wordpress 2.8) the wp-config.php file, modified it using the MySQL database name, username, password and the name of the local host....saved it and closed it.

4. uplodaded the wordpress file i extracted into www/blog using CuteFTP

5. then went to run the install script at http://newgenpop.com/wp-admin/install.php
.......then got a 404 error page -- file not found

Im unsure where in the process im screwing up. Do any fellow wordpress users have any advice to offer ????

Thanks in advance!!!!

Hello,

I sent a second reply to your Service Desk ticket earlier and indicated it appears you placed all of your WordPress files in a directory not in the /www directory and you would need to move them to your /www directory.

Hi,

I've sent a follow-up to your Service Desk ticket to provide the location of your install file.

Hope it helps :)

Thank you so much! Melissa, your follow up did the trick. Now Im able to install & modify it from the web browser at www.newgenpop.com/wordpress

However.....I cant view the blog (which will eventually become the main page) by only going to www.newgenpop.com This is ok for now, as its still under construciton. However, I intend for it to be in the "root directory" -- assuming the root directory is the main page viewable by the public from the web upon opening.

Any advice? Should I upload/move the wordpress file into another directory? Its currently in the /www directory

Another site owner was in a similar situation not too long ago:

"www" is your root directory. Your main page is in the "wordpress" directory. If your blog is going to be what you want visitors to see first upon visiting your site, move all the wordpress files out of your "wordpress" directory into the "www" directory.

Using "wordpress" as a subdirectory is only necessary if you have your blog as an offshoot of your main site.
