I keep the MIME types on the server up-to-date with both the standard and some of the more exotic ones like the multitude of MacroMedia's types for Flash/Shockwave/etc...

i personally wouldn't use the <BGSOUND> tag.. cuz it only works in MSIE ..

and I personally do not mind MIDI on a web site.. I think it gives it added personality! http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

what was the code you were trying to use?

are you certain you had the correct file name ?

here is how I did it...
<EMBED src=anyman.mid Hidden=true width=145 height=60 loop=true autostart=true volume=50>

and I have not had any probs with it. IT just deafens Justin! http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

I was trying to EMBED a midi file, but it won't play. I think the mid or midi mime-type is not set on the server, can anybody help?

I've had nothing but problems using the <EMBED> tag with Netscape - <BGSOUND> with Explorer works fine. Netscape tells me that I don't have any plugins installed...

Personally, I would use an optional sound:

<a href="http://www.domain.xxx/annoyingsoundfile.mid">Click Here for Music</a>

No offense, but that is usually the prefered method. I run mp3's in the background a lot and I hate when suddenly there's a midi file that I can't turn off unless I leave the page. And with Explorer, it keeps turning up the midi volume, no matter how hard I press the mouse button on the mute checkbox...

Ok, now that I've thrown in my 88 cents, I should say that I'm pretty sure the mime types are correct - especially for such a common file format. It may be the browser. Try the <BGSOUND> tag in Explorer, see if it works, or just put a link to the file, see if Media Player or whatever opens up. That will tell you if it's server or browser.
