image maps and alt tags

I've been using MapMaker32 to make some image maps, but the alt tags refuse to show UNLESS the sections mapped are all in a line.
I mapped a bar, with sections, and the alt tags work, but I've mapped another image with sections not aligned, and the alt tags refuse to show!
What's with this? Anybody have any clue? Or am I doomed to live without alt tags?

I should clarify I guess
MapMaker generates the code and everything, so it comes up looking like this

<AREA SHAPE="rect" COORDS="404,1,468,23", HREF="free.html" ALT="Freebies">

(plus a bunch more lines)
and I just paste it into the file I'm using.
The alt tag is already specified, but they don't show up when you mouse over the image.
