okay.. i have a question.. and feeling kinda upset and slightly aggrevated.
I WAS trying to edit a cgi script. in NOTEPAD.. cuz it is what i have.. i had a twenty character line that i wanted to cut from one file.. and paste into another.. and the darn computer told me i did not have enough memory?? *WHY?*
SO.. I called my tech computer guy.. and he said.. i had plenty of memory..
question..
does notepad have a limited amount of memory? I don't even know how to ask this question. Are some files to large to use in Notepad?
and what can I use for an alternative editor that is affordable.. and at this point in my life.. *FREE* is affordable.
please help...
thanks

Yes, notepad has a limit to how large a file can be.... I hate that!
I use UltraEdit (no limit) you can use it free for a while but it is shareware www.ultraedit.com (http://www.ultraedit.com)
Many people are also using Arachnophilia for their editing... this is careware (the cost is a kind word/action) http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index.html
There are MANY editors out there -- free, cheap, and expensive -- 99% of them are better then notepad http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

I use CheapPad - it's like Notepad, but it handles very large files, it has a toolbar, an MRU list (most recently used files, in the File menu), it remembers it's window position, and the best part: It only uses a character code 10 for new lines - in other words, LF, instead of CRLF. Saves confusion.
Oh, and it was written by some super-genious http://www.vdj.net/1.gif
The price: Free, but with a catch. It is only 60k, but it requires the VB6 runtimes, adding 1.2M to the size http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif
And saving is slow on a large file (for a 1 Meg file, it takes almost 2 whole seconds). That's because it saves each character one at a time to strip character 13's (CR).

BTW, if you have a problem copying a line into the clipboard, that has nothing to do with Notepad's 64K limit (32k in Windows95) - I think it's one of Windows' memory management bugs. There are a number of things you have to do to make Windows work right. I don't remember all of them, which is why I hope I never have to reinstall again, but one of the better one's is to tell Windows that your computer is a Network Server (Control Panel --> System --> Performance --> File System --> Typical Role of this Machine).
That helps with disk caching and stuff. I also limit Virtal Memory to 64K. Windows *****es about that and warns the hell out of you before letting you change this - I do it anyway. This prevents excessive swapping (copying memory to hard disk to free up physical memory - very slow). And the VCache - I forgot how to change that, but it's in system.ini and it speeds things up too.
There's about 999 other tweaks that I've done and I don't remember most of them off hand, but I never have memory problems with 64 Megs, and I typically run tons of crap in the background when I'm working on stuff.
Um, I think maybe I'll write a book and spare the forums some disk space http://www.vdj.net/2.gif

Seeing things? Nah. http://www.vdj.net/i.gif

I have been procrastinating all month long and can't seem to get motivated at all. Instead, I'm tweaking the hell out of the UBB code (nice so far, BTW) and drawing silly pics http://www.vdj.net/3.gif and such. I can't wait to get the UBB fully done, because I'm going to make all kinds of images like that with special codes and stuff, most will be undocumented. Like certain phrases will automatically become a pic. I'm going to go far beyond the http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif's and stuff.
I'm in that silly mood again. Oh, well. At lease I'm not feeling http://www.vdj.net/1.gif today.

ROFL!!!
I know I have seen that big bloodshot eye before... hmmmmmm wonder where?
At any rate -- I often times see things in the UBB I would love to dig into (but time wont allow -- pout) so I'll share one tiny idea with you that seems to fit into your goals.... rather then having bad words replaced with *** why not with "good words" or a 'special image' http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
Replace bi**h with "nice person" and as*h*le with "great human" etc... I've seen this done on other scripts and always thought it was cute:P

That sounds like a cool eye-dea, but the freeware version doesn't have a cussword filter http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif Maybe I'll try to incorperate one in.
Anyway, it's all posted and seems to work halfway decent, if anyone wants to check it out - http://www.vdj.net/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi
Oh, sorry Deb http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I changed my colors around on my site again - We're Back in Black!
I left the banner alone this time, though. The more I think about the cussword thing, the more I like it! That would surely pi$$ off the spammers!
I was thinking of possibly replacing the words with similar, less dirty, and more silly words, and put them in italics for effect:
I hate you, you studpid dummy! I think you and your ideas are really stinking smart! You should just shove them right up your stinking booty, that's what I think. Go suck a lemon, ok? You hear me, butt-head?
Something like that. Or just insert <adjective>:
I hate your <adjective> guts! Suck a big fat <adjective> <noun>, you big <adjective> peice of <noun>!
That will be fun, because then you get to play ad-lib when reading the posts! I also like the idea that you can go there and vent http://www.vdj.net/3.gif !!!
Justin
-- Eye think that's eye-noying! --
-- Bad joke --
Justin,
You can use a simple hash (in postings.cgi or a library, or somewhere);
%badwords = (
'expletive' => 'replacement',
'another' => 'replacement2',
'noun' => '<noun>',
'and so on' => 'and so forth'
);
Then in postings.cgi (I'm not sure of placement tho), use this;
for(keys(%badwords)){
$FORM_INPUT{'ReplyMessage'} =~ s/$_/ $badwords{$_}/gi;
$FORM_INPUT{'Message'} =~ s/$_/ $badwords{$_}/gi;
}
You could also set it to translate badwords out of the subject lines, use it in Ultimate.cgi to censor the usernames, etc... Another fun use is to just translate normal words. For example, I've seen em translate 'scripts' to 'scr|pts', things like that. It can really tweak on a user's mind tho if you go too far *eg*

hehe - that's funny as - um - heck!
I did it differently though. I took the basic idea of parsing UBB code and made it do what I needed it to do. Here's what I did. In a library:
sub Badwords {
my $TheText = shift;
$TheText =~ s/(Word)/ <font color=ff0000>fudge<\/font> /isg;
return($TheText);
}
Then in postings.cgi:
$Message = &Badwords("$Message");
I repeated the line in the sub once for each word, and it replaces it and turns it red. It's pretty fudging cool, if you ask me!

Ok, now I'm having too much fun with this! Now it converts dic to coc - so the word "Dictionary" becomes "Coctionary". hehe
I have a habit of replacing the prefix often in normal speach - I know that it's recoculous, but hey - I may get a laugh or two!
I removed the font color= crap, figuring it's better if it's subtle. Reading someone's angry post, you would think that they are a wuss!! hehe http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
Any reference to certain anatomy becomes wee-wee, and there's poop, hump, female dog, etc.
Of course, it's some real dirty code! Hehe - I need to slow down on the coffee a little bit today. I will probably remove the dic=coc thing before I actually upload the files... Now for some interesting smiley's...

Now I'm having a problem. I have a friend named Dick. Um, what do I do here? Should I set up some complex context serching thing? I don't want to have to call him wee-wee! That would suck.. Uh, stink.
Sorry, but I now have to figure this out. It's gonna bug me if I don't. Now I know how the Eboniciser works http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I found that in the sites forum. I could have a Redneck forum that automagically converts words and phrases into Redneck speak (no offence down there, BTW).

God I hate Netscape!!! I never realized this before, but Netscape will not carry over ANY font information into a table. IE4 will carry over the font face, but not the size. Netscape does neither.
So I had to go through the whole UBB and add FACE=$FontFace to every font tag!! AUGH!! It also doesn't support font:bold in CSS - you have to say font-weight:bold.
As much as people hate IE, it is VERY forgiving, where Netscape (4.08 here) if nit-picky about everything.
All around, I got it to look the same in both, so I guess I'm happy. Oh, Netscape doesn't support <hr color=... either. That sux. Too light a color for a black background by default.
I'm not a Microsoft lover, either - in my cussword routine, it automagically changes Microsoft to Micro$oft, and MS to M$ http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
But IE is a better browser, no matter what everyone else says. Netscape has no hover color, no self.status, no storing images in a variable (I had to put a 1 pixel version of each of my link description images at the bottom - can't do width=0 or height=0 in NS), poor CSS support, and it causes Illegal Operations left and right. Especially with Shockwaved sites (I hate shockwave too, and Java for that matter!)
I guess I'm just an opinionated SOB today, huh? I'm just in a bad mood. But now my site looks pretty much the same in both browsersaurs, so I'm ok. I just need some sleep. Why must one need to sleep? Wouldn't the world be more productive with the extra couple of hours each day?
Ok, I'm done now.

hahahhaa... i love it.. Justin.. what's wrong bud? I kinda like ya in a bad mood.. hehehe.. you are most creative.. *LOL*
as for the cussing.. I agree with deb, make it a positive word. it could make for some funny reading.. hehehe.
and back to the original topic. of notepad.. I had all other apps shut down.. and still got the memory prob. BUT only with notepad... piece of crap program. http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif
I like UltraEdit for how it puts everythig in these different colors, it kinda helps you to understand the code.. *when you are learning like me*
Andrew was right.. perl is pretty cool. I am by no means ready to write my own scripts yet.. but i have fun playing with someone else's code.

Hearts,
This also had me confused when I recently moved to FQuest. Andrews clever SuExec prog means anything you place in the cgi-bin or a directory below it, needs only a 755 permission. Don't ask me how it works.. it just does http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif What I do know is giving any script a 777 permission is an open invitation to a seasoned hacker who decides you're gonna be his next victim...eek.
Dean.

yeah.. I don't get that either..
I went to their forum.. and they say you can "try" setting it at 755 after the first entry.. it "might work"
I noticed in the cgi script itself.. it says chmodd 666
chmod (0666, "$GB_NON_CGI_Path/entries.file");
I guess this is because it is SUPPOSED to create a entries.file.. but this script didn't. I had to create it myself.
is it possible.. to chmod at 755 regardless and have the scripts still work? *if you are NOT at future quest?*

i know it is here somewhere.. ?? I need to inderstand this chmodding thing at future quest.
I believe I have read that all scripts are automagically set for 755, but what happens when the "directions" tell you to chmodd in 666 or 777?
For example the UBB guestbook. To set variables for the first time.. they tell you to chmodd the directory at 777 and then go back and chmodd back to 755. And the entries.file has to be chmodded at 666 and the pl files have to be chmodded at 777.
so.. how do you work with this here? *I know there is a forum thread pertaining to this type of question.*

Let me refer you here:
http://www.aota.net/ubb/Forum3/HTML/000119.html
Del explained it better than I could. Basically, though, FQuest's server is set up right, where if the script is yours, it runs under your user id - meaning anything you can do to a file, the script can do. So the permissions don't have to be set for the world to be able to write to it - just you, a.k.a. the script.
This makes sense, because your files can still be protected from others, while at the same time, your script can do as it needs to do. This is taken from the UBB setup, but should apply to any script.
As for other servers, I doubt it. I don't know, so don't quote me on that (or any of the above - see Del's post about that). If I'm wrong, though, someone can just slap me or something, and I may shut up for a while http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
