I have had a site here since 03 and am looking at starting a couple new sites. They will be similar in focus, but there will not be duplicate content. Specifically 1 site promotes the services of 2 people while the other site will promote an association/group of people.

I've been told that using the same host for more than one website will hurt your SEO, any thoughts on this.

I think that I can put one of the new sites in my current package as a different folder and have the domain point to it, but that would mean they would not only be at the same host, but on the same server.

How bad is that?

I appreciate any feedback as I've not found a clear discussion on the topic.

If the two sites have different IP addresses, outside entities cannot determine whether they are on the same server or not.

Personally I choose not to worry about such things. I suspect it would only be a factor in the link value between the sites in question and under normal circumstances at best that will be such a small overall factor (links from one or two single sites to one or two other sites) that it's not a concern for me. I'd rather spend the time I would spend setting up the sites with a different host instead on building more content which I think will have an overall greater advantage.

thanks Sheila and Jeff.

I think sometimes I see something and make more of it than need be, as jeff pointed out.

Sheila. so at futurequest, if i get a new package for this new site, how would i know if it would have a different ip address? does every domain pointing to a fq site get assigned a specific ip?

thanks again

ps - content is king as they always say :yeah:

All full hosting packages (Visionary, Pioneer, Prospector and up etc) have their own dedicated IP address.

IRMs and IROs share the IP address of the hosting package that they overlay.

Gary, I'd make them both IRM's and call it a day. The only reason I would open a new package is if you needed mysql access, like, if you were usinga cms, blog etc to publish the sites.
