I am currently doing some website consulting, which I don’t do much of. When I went looking for a web based collaboration tool, I was surprised that I had trouble finding what I needed.

For this project, I have quite a lengthy to do list, and the client does as well. I’m sure most projects are the same way. In addition to classic to do’s, I have simple declarations that need noting to the client for approval and visa versa.

I’ve looked at backpack, google docs, and many others, but I can’t quite find what I’m looking for.

I need something that makes it simple to collaborate back and forth that is preferably website development specific.

I searched the forums here for such a thing, but couldn’t find anything relevant. So, for those that do quite a bit of site development and client interaction, what tools do you use to collaborate?

It takes a while to really master the use of basecamp to it's full potential. I'd give it 3 projects before you make up your mind. Once i got to really using it, it was an easy choice. The user interface is beautiful, fast, simple, elegant.

One caveat, though-- I've had major pushback from at least one client who found it to be too complicated. BUT the client is admittedly non-technical, to the point where they don't even like using email, and even going to their client space on my site to look at design comps is painful.

For clients who are at least comfortable with computers and web interfaces -- esp. Web 2.0-style -- Basecamp is great.

Then again, if you've already tried Backpack -- also by Basecamp builder 37signals -- Basecamp might be a little too generic for you if you're looking for webdev-specific features.
