I haven't thought about this since the windows 9x days, but recently someone suggested I provide a few images I've done as wallpaper on the website... anyone currently do this? How do you cope with the multitude of resolutions now running on widescreen notebooks, large and small monitors, etc? Do you resample the full resolution primary image down to each of the most common resolutions and provide an individual option to download each one? Use some kind of javascript to detect the visitor's resolution and provide the "best fit" link? Provide a higher resolution image and let the downloader's OS sample it down to fit their desktop?

If it were me, I would provide the following resolutions, and let the user choose the best for their system from them:

1024 x 768 (4:3)
1280 x 1024 (5:4)
1280 x 720 (16:9)

Make sure that your image is is 1:1 in each of those sizes, cropping or filling the top or sides artistically as you desire.

This covers the majority of screen aspect ratios, everything else is a close fit to one of those.

I would add that a lot of the interest in cool wallpapers is from the multiple monitor crowd, and you'd be smart to include resolutions addressing at least double and triple monitors, and regular/widescreen verisons of each.

I actually am a paid member of a digital art site (http://www.digitalblasphemy.com/dbhome.shtml) that provides wallpapers, mostly because A) I like to change the wallpaper a lot, but am not much of an artist myself and B) the guy who runs that site does a very, very comprehensive job with the wide variety of resolutions - I never feel like I'll be left out if I change to another setup. Okay, I'm just now noticing that the free area of the site doesn't give all the multiple monitor setups, but I'm willing to bet you can multiply by 2 and 3 :dopey:. The paid section also has more mobile device resolutions than just the iPhone.
