Does time capsule / time machine scale easily beyond 1 TB?

Is it easy to daisy chain or otherwise add capacity to apple's time capsule / time machine to provide 4+ TB of backup space?

I was thinking about buying one and from what I can tell the answer is no. If you add an external drive you can backup to either drive but there's no spanning from one to the other. From the reports I have read I wouldn't trust it to backup 4TB of data anyway. I am looking into buying a Thecus or Netgear (Infrant) RAID array.
