Hi all, I'm looking for a bit of help on getting started. I'm completely knew to setting up a website.

The problem is, I've uploaded my index.html file to my www/ directory, but then when I try and view my site (by entering the address in my browser), it doesn't work(!) In Firefox I get a popup saying "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded" and in Explorer, I get a "The address is not a valid page" and the address changes to http:///

Could someone help, please?

Thanks in advance.

Are you entering a domain name? Is your domain name new, and has it had time to propagate yet???

Thanks for the quick reply, John.

Yes, I'm entering a domain name. It was registered and paid for yesterday. My registrar gives me the choice of having their standard "Under Construction" page whilst I build the site. When I choose that option, I'm able to view their page, but after unticking it to view the homepage I've created, I got the above error messages. Am I doing something wrong?

Ah...actually I forgot to change the IP with my registrar so it'll probably need to propogate yet. No doubt I'll repost if it doesn't work. Thanks again.

Hi,

Once you've changed the name servers on the domain to the FutureQuest name servers (which you have according to my check if I'm looking at the correct domain), those changes need time to propagate before the domain name will fully work as expected. In the interim, you can access your site by using the IP number provided to you in Section 3 of your Activation Letter. I'm not able to check your site, however, as you've password protected it and I don't have the access information required. Are you still seeing a problem when using the IP address to access?

Thanks very much Melissa! Yes, it's fine now that I tried the temporary one of 69.5.19.97.

Message to all new users: read the activation mail fully before you query a problem like this, unlike me :dopey:

Hi again, I think it's working now but could you tell me how I remove the need to type in a password to access my website, please? :blah:

Hi again, I think it's working now but could you tell me how I remove the need to type in a password to access my website, please? :blah:Sure. Just click the box in front of the www directory in the CNC, then choose the Password Protect button from the bottom menu. Follow the instructions from there to remove the user from the directory/password file.
