It appears that my shutdown problem:

is due to the wrong HAL being installed during setup. What's the best way to reinstall XP over an existing install and not lose current data and settings?

The WakeOnLan problem???

You have to turn this off for the card in XP, not in BIOS.

Go to Device Manager, find the Network Adapter, right click and select properties, then the Advanced Tab, then make sure all the "WakeUp..." items are set to a value of "disabled".

This should take care of things if it is the Wake On Lan issue - this used to drive me crazy too.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, it's not the wake on LAN issue. I have a
"ACPI Multiprocessor PC", ACPI APIC MP HAL (Halmacpi.dll)

However during setup, windows installed
"Standard PC", Non-ACPI PIC HAL (Hal.dll)

So I'm back to the reinstall issue, best way anyone?

Go into Device Manager. Under Computer you'll see "Standard PC." Right-click and select Update Driver.

Choose all of the manual install options (bottom radio button in general), and when you get to the end you should see "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" listed among the choices.
