I've seen some posts referring to very vexing problems concerning Dreamweaver FTP problems on Futurequest. Unfortunately these threads have been marked as "expired by Fquest". Thus this post. :rasberry:

From time to time I get very frustrating "unable to connect" and "timeout" errors using Dreamweaver CS3 on Futurequest. Perplexing to me is that on my Pair Networks Servers, this problem does not happen - ever.

At my wits end, I have in the past re-installed DW CS3 and wasted lots of time and energy trying to resolve this problem on Futurequest, akin to the problems many customers have suffered with Movable Type 4.1

After much research and time wasted I finally found the solution, at least for my situation.

It appears that on websites that are really working and paying their way on Futurequest, the FTP is creaky or anemic especially during high traffic.

I tested this dozens of times on one of my busy sites on Fquest and got the ftp timeouts A LOT!

On an account that has little movement (yeah, I am donating about 8 Gigs of bandwidth to Fquest every month - that's like 96 Gigs bandwidth per annum - multiply that by a few thousand customers and you can see this is huge moneymaker for webhosts), NO PROBLEMA - no Dreamweaver FTP errors or timeouts. :hrmm:

I dug around and discovered that the Dreaweaver CS3 site timeout on new installs defaults to 4 seconds - much too small for FutureQuest's aging and creaking servers under load. :blah:

The solution is to set the default to 40 seconds or more and BINGO! No more Dreamweaver FTP timeouts, or "unable to connect" FTP errors on my money-making sites. :yeah:

Hi mromero,

I'm not sure which posts you're referring to, as you didn't link to them so we could address those specifically. And, I'm afraid there is quite a bit of information missing from your tests to even begin to try to make the comparisons between what might be different with the sites/times. However, in doing a Google search, Dreamweaver CS3 FTP timeout problems do not appear to be restricted to FutureQuest.

Some examples:

http://www.mindfrost82.com/f179-dreamweaver/84055-re-dreamweaver-cs3-ftp-error-cannot-make-connection-host.html

http://www.adras.com/FTP-Keeps-Timing-Out.t68766-129.html

FWIW, Adobe supposedly, at one time anyway, had the default number of seconds for "time out" set to 60 according to:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14834&sliceId=2
FTP time out
When an FTP command is sent to the server, the client expects a confirmation message back, or the command is cancelled. FTP Time Out establishes how long Dreamweaver waits for a response from the server before giving up on a command. Too high a setting causes Dreamweaver to idle and seem 'frozen' if the server doesn't respond. Too low a setting causes commands to abort prematurely. The default setting, 60 seconds, handles most situations properly. If you're having problems connecting, try increasing the FTP Time Out to 120 seconds.

If you're a Mac user (I don't recall for sure), there were also some issues specific to it that were addressed in the following and you may wish to review it in case any apply:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=189&threadid=1310626

What other differences might there be to consider? During what tasks are the time-outs happening? Is the file listing longer on one site than it is another (possible problems/delays created by the check in/out, sync processes?)? Are you using Pasv or Active mode? Have you eliminated a potential interference from a firewall? When you experience these issues, have you checked for other connectivity issues at that time? Do you have logs you can send us? Can you provide times/dates to us for checking our logs? Have you experienced the same type of problem with a standalone FTP client?

Honestly, I don't know of any of the FutureQuest servers that could be considered "creaky"... However, if there are issues on our end that need correcting, I can assure you that we will do what we can to make that happen (within reason, of course).

I've quickly found one expired post:
http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?t=21414&highlight=dreamweaver+ftp

I am using Dreamweaver on XP with SFTP. XP Firewall turned off but do have a firewall on a separate box guarding my network.

Logging in with WSFTP is no problem.

Changing the Dreamweaver site timeout to for e.g. 40 seconds instead of the default 4 seconds has fixed this issue for me.
