I swear once upon a time I got a link from these forums, to an Ebay store Dell had set up for some of their refurbished gear. I've dropped it somewhere along the line, and search isn't giving it up today. Does anyone know what I am talking about?

I think this is the post you're thinking of:

(I remembered that Randall had posted that piece of info...)

I swear once upon a time I got a link from these forums, to an Ebay store Dell had set up for some of their refurbished gear. I have a vague memory (well, almost all of my memories are vague, so this probably qualifies as a neurological rumor) of something like that, but I can't find it now either. Maybe it wasn't eBay, but some third party was involved. :ytthink:

So, I found the old thread (http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?t=15260) in question. Alas, it looks like Dell isn't doing the Ebay thing anymore.

I really can't complain about the regular refurb. program though. The laptop we just got my daughter is a dual core, 2 gig RAM, internal wi-fi powerhouse . . . for $600. The hard drive is a bit small, but I was picky about only taking a machine that had XP - I'm not dealing with Vista laptops just yet, and I can always replace the HDD.

All this research, because we are buying a second one soon for Daughter Number Two.

I'm a nice mom for letting them give their machines crappy South Park references as network names, right??? Ugh, so much for my Mother of the Year (http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?postid=159646#post159646) award. Again.

. . . so this probably qualifies as a neurological rumor
Hehe!

They do sell refurbs on their own site, the pricing isn't always the best though. I did buy a desktop about 6 months ago there which was a bargain because it came with Office Pro.

That's another element where I can save a buck by being choosy about which refurb I take through Dell; I can decline machines with Office, because (in January, when she starts college) I can get her Office 2007 Ultimate Edition directly through MS (http://www.theultimatesteal.com/home.asp) for $60.
