I was using the password protection function available in the file manager.[nbsp][nbsp]However, I wasn't able to protect all webpages under www folder.[nbsp][nbsp]My way to get around it is to create a subfolder under www, and move all pages to that folder, and then password protect that folder.[nbsp][nbsp]It works, but really not pretty. When I launch my URL, I saw a list of folders first.[nbsp][nbsp] How can I prompt visitors for password once they type in my URL?[nbsp][nbsp]

Yes, I want my domain name password protected.[nbsp][nbsp]Say, visitor will be prompted for entering password once they type in my URL on the web.[nbsp][nbsp]Is that doable here?[nbsp][nbsp]Thanks!

Please see the following tutorial. To password protect your whole domain simply put the .htaccess file in your www directory.

Once you have done this test it out and you should be good to go :)

Please clarify exactly what folders you want password protected. Do you want everything including your domain name password protected?

When I protect my web site as described, can I display a special message or put an initial web page saying something like "please enter your user name and password. If you want to get a password to access this site, please send an e-mail to ...." when the server asks for a password?

Are you looking for a unique login for each user? It sort of sounds like it . . . you might want something more like Account Manager (http://cgi.elitehost.com/acctman/) which comes in a Pro version as well as a Lite/Shareware version.

When you password protect your site using .htaccess, it isn't really the server that asks the user for a password - it is the user's browser. The server just tells the browser that it cannot return the page without a user and password. I don't think there is any way to tell the browser to use a special message to tell the user.
I think that you could change the error page to tell the user to "Send an e-mail to . . ." if you want.
