For over a year I've had this (http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?t=19149) problem subscribing to a W3C mailing list. I emailed the service desk as it says in that thread and I think I was told that my emails to the mailing list were being received but not responded to. Recently I investigated further, and here's the reply I received from someone on the W3C Systems Team. The problem is that our mailing list software (smartlist) refuses
to reply to mail from email addresses that start with 'mail@',
because it assumes such messages are from other automated mail
systems, and replying could trigger a dangerous mail loop.

The only solution for now is for list maintainers to process
these sub/unsub requests manually; I have done so in this case.
(added mail - at - polisource.com to www-validator.) Unfortunately you
will be unable to post to the list from that address, sorry.

We should probably consider removing this feature from our list
software. So after all these years, now I know not to use a mail@ address.

I was told that my emails were being received but not responded to...meaning that my emails to the W3C list weren't being responded to. No problem with Futurequest's service desk.
