Hi,
I have a strange problem that maybe some of the smart people here can help with.

On my website, I post daily zip files for download. I put these files on my AOL space. Yes, I have an AOL account. The only reason I've kept it is because of using this space for the files so my website bandwidth is kept down. If I posted them on my domain space, I couldn't afford the bandwidth.

For the past few days, anyone using Internet Explorer or Netscape can't download the files. They get a connection was reset error. HOWEVER, people using AOL's version of Internet Explorer CAN download the files.

Any thoughts on this? Could I have done something to my code to cause this? I have no idea and of course, AOL only issues a cut and paste response.

Thanks!

hi pc,

i was able to access and download your files using the Mac netscape 4.73. though the files are zipped and in .wav format, i can still open and play them with Quicktime.

an an aol user, they have had some server problems in the last few days. perhaps it was a momentary glitch, as it seems to be working today.

hope this helps,

I tried downloading from your site, but got the reset error in IE5.[nbsp][nbsp]So I went directly to the AOL page ( http://members.aol.com/ohyesuare1/ ), and I was able to download it without a problem.[nbsp][nbsp]I think they may have some sort of referring page blocking set up so that people don't steal their bandwidth (like you) ;)[nbsp][nbsp].

Hope this helps :)

I just tried again, but got the reset error directly from the AOL directory listing.[nbsp][nbsp]There goes that theory ;) .

Hi Jim,
Actually it's not really stealing bandwidth. I pay for the account and on the ftp pages it says that you may post files for download to share with friends. So that's what I'm doing. It says you can use the space for your AOL pages OR files for the purpose I just mentioned. It seems legit to me because of the wording. ;)[nbsp][nbsp] Basically they say you can do with the space what you want but you can't go over 2MB's per screen name.

If it was some kind of block, they just did it the past few days.

p.s. Maybe it is just a short term glitch like JAK suggested. But everyone visiting is screaming at me about it and I sure don't know what to tell them.

Is it possible that AOL is blocking access from non AOL web sites??
It might help if you posted the URL.

I don't know. Could they even do that technically?

Well, I tried to download a file, several times, with NS 4.61 and IE5, and I got the "reset" error, too.

Thanks!

Yep, me too with Netscape and IE5. It works fine if I use the crappy AOL browser which is some version of IE. This is really strange.

The files ARE there so I can't imagine what the problem is.

I tried downloading the file this AM and the download started but at 2% I got the Netscape Connection reset by Peer box.[nbsp][nbsp]I know that many of the "FREE" web hosters block access to downloading files from referrers outside of their Domain.[nbsp][nbsp]I would bet that this is what "AOL" :P is doing.
