I think setting up paypal on a site is the easiest way to accomplish what you're describing, and they take credit cards. And most customers will be familiar with it and comfortable.

My experience is that Paypal looks unprofessional. I have just set up a merchant account with Humbolt Merchant Services (http://www.webspaceenterprises.com/merchant.php) (actually, through Matt) and the basic fees come to a minimum of $50 per month. It was super easy to set up, and now I can accept Visa/MC for my Web design services.

I had always heard how complex and confusing it was to set up a merchant account, but
it was quite painless.

Alsfeena,

I gather from your web site that you are not operating inside the U.S. A big problem with accepting credit cards internationally is that you open yourself up to a lot of risk. Most U.S. merchant banks require that you have a U.S. presence in order to obtain an international merchant account. PayPal may be your best option for just starting out. Depending upon the types of goods and services you are offering, other third party merchants may be an option. It all depends on your location, your target customers, your operating budget, and what you're selling.

My recommendation, if you are operating out of the United Arab Emirates, is to inquire with local businesses to determine how they do things. They will be in the best position to offer advice specific to your geographic circumstances.

Egg-xactly. For my purposes I've always prefered that paypal incur the risk of storing and processing people's credit card info rather than me. But then my ecommerce has always been small potatoes.

Paypal seems good option here however you could check with chronopay if you are located in EU/UK, I have heard they have no monthly or annual fees, they provide everything that you need to accept and process payments by credit and (some) debit cards online.
