I am such an RSS newbie... You know how Mozilla has the BBC news feed that gathers all the news stories and allows you to jump directly to a news story? Is there a way to have other papers, say, the NY Times do this? So that each day, when I open my browser, I see the top stories from that paper?

Can you explain a step by step aproach to make this happen? OR do I need a RSS reader to do this?

You're using Mozilla to read the BBC news feed? Then there must be a way to "add a new feed" or "subscribe to a new feed". I don't use Mozilla, though, so I'm not sure how you do that for that particular browser.

The RSS news readers usually have more advanced features and provide more customization than the browsers that also provide news feed features. But if you don't require those features, then you should be able to get by just using your browser.

Hmm. Yes, it seems to come pre loaded with the BBC news feed. So, it is a new drop down each day. Very nice. Would like to add other news feed. Have become a news junkie.

Yup, that did it. is was REALLY simple. You look for the little orange feed signal in the address bar, and click on it. It asks you if you want to add it to your toolbar. And Whalla! you have a live feed in your toolbar. :):)

So, SFGate is a respected news source? I see it all the time in Google News but I never heard about it before then and I've been skipping it if there are articles from papers I've heard of.

It's a big city paper. It's San Francisco's daily paper...

Any other feeds I should be including in my daily scan?

OK, so I just updated Rose's blog so that there is a live RSS feed, and I added it to my toolbar. I have just entered the new century. :) Very cool. I had removed all the RSS stuff from her blog (basically because I didn't understand it!) but just put that all back, and Whalla! RSS is Amazing! And it works right in my browser.... Yippee!

You didn't make the requisite jokes about the Chronicle... but maybe things have changed since I lived out there. The plate rails (I see in your picture) sure haven't! Every apt. in SF must still have those!

Thanks for the RSS links, I've been meaning to do that.......

Blogs have RSS feeds too you know. :) When I first started using RSS I mainly read headlines, but now I mainly read blogs. I've got a customized home page in both Yahoo! (my original) and Google (considering switching to) that have different news feeds, and I have the blogs in the Feed menu in Opera. I've been thinking I need to get them all in one place - maybe I'll look into FeedDemon. I'm not sure I want to pay money to manage my feeds, though.

Kitchen, that is a picture rail... we have all of our artwork hanging from fishing wire off those rails. I like the rail, as a physical entity, but would prefer to have a picture hook and fix the art on the walls. But the LL insists we not do that...

What are the digs about eh Chronicle? The Examiner, that I know is not so reliable... my partner recently said "The Examiner finally accepts what it is and isn't trying to be more than it is". I am not sure what it is, but I trust her judgement. ;) But, Gretchen and I were on the front page of the living (or lifestyle) section, full page, fullm color -- a couple years ago for a film we made that was showing in the film festival. At that time, I didn't care which paper it was. It was pretty neat. (Evie thinks aloud: "I should scan that and upload that sometime.")

Snarpy, yes, I now know that blogs have RSS feeds and now I know WHAT THEY DO! (I don't want to get tons of spam or unwanted visitors to my kid's blog, but if you go to my site and add /rose/ you'll see her blog, and the RSS feed now works. :) I just know that these forums get a LOT of traffic, and I am slightly protective of her blog. Not sure if I need to be or what...)

Hi Evie,

Yes, most major news sources produce RSS feeds. Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, NY Times, Financial Times, TheStreet.com, and on and on.

You can save your RSS "channels," which are groups of RSS feeds, into an OPML file. Those are helpful. For example, if you didn't want to have to manually add each WSJ feed, I could send you my OPML file with WSJ RSS feeds and you'd have most, if not all, the WSJ RSS feeds.

I think everything is going RSS. One well known VC Paul Kedrosky is big on RSS. If you're interested in knowing where he believes this stuff is going, try googling his name and RSS.

Best regards,
Kevin

I learned how to read with the San Francisco Chronicle, Examiner and the LA Times.

San Francisco often thinks that the rest of the world is out of touch with reality--and vice versa. The San Francisco papers and SFGate reflect the views of their readership, and whether you agree with them or not they do often have interesting and/or outrageous points of view.

Have you tried the web-based Bloglines? I like it best...

Andi,

Do give FeedDemon and Newsgator a try. I have tried Bloglines, but prefer FeedDemon & Newsgator combination.

If you always use one PC, then I think you'll find FeedDemon unbeatable because of its features. If you want to access your feeds from different locations, then FeedDemon and Newsgator are great because they synchronize with each other. Newsgator is similar to Bloglines.

Do give FeedDemon and Newsgator a try.OK I will. A few years ago I tried several local readers (Amphetadesk and others) and found them sluggish, buggy and their constant refreshing was annoying (which on those I tried was not adjustable). But I never tried FeedDemon or Newsgator so I'll give them a shot. Trying new software when what I'm using still works is rare for me. :)

This may be tangential to what you're asking Evoir, but if you use Firefox then you can download their "Sage" plugin.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/77/

It's a very good RSS reader that's assimilated into the browser. Not that I've used a lot of other RSS readers but I like this one. After downloading just select "Tools/Sage", go to any website, press the hourglass icon which starts a feed search, then select the desired feed (it finds at least one most of the time), and press the "Add Feed" button.

Just FYI.

press the hourglass icon...I was confused by this for a minute, it's actually a magnifying glass icon. I like Sage. Thanks Myra,
