character limit on directories?

Is there a character limit on directories and subdirectories?[nbsp][nbsp]How about a limit on how many layers you can subdirector-ize?

Just trying to troubleshoot an oddly behaving directory on a project site, thanks!

Make that a limit on the NUMBER of characters in directory name, I was a bit less than clear there . . .[nbsp]

I think the limit with an ext2 linux filesystem is 256 characters. But there might also be a limit on the length of a pathname also, so I would use some care in using very long filenames for directories.
