Has anyone yet posted a narrative of installing Movable Type onto a site with multiple IRMs? I want to install two blogs on one site while leaving the primary domain a plain-ol web page.
All I was able to gleen is that you must use flat files on IRMs. That is fine with me. If anyone has any info on this I would appreciate it. :clapper:
Thanks in advance.

Evoir is the resident Movable Type expert here - maybe she can reply?
I currently have MT on two accounts with FQuest here but using the MYSQL database. When I have time I will try to install into IRMs....

I don't have a narrative to offer you, but I just wanted to assure you it's totally doable; I had an MT blog for a couple years, as an IRM. (Obviously, flatfile version . . . I'm not sure there was even any option then? This would have been about mid 2002 - mid 2004 or so.)
If I recall, it was totally seamless for viewers; I just had to be careful about pointing to the account's cgi-bin with relative paths and all that.

Not sure how this would work. Say you want to run MT on ten IRMs - you install ONE copy of MT in the main account's cgi-bin?
Wouldn't it be easier to create cgi bins in every IRM and give them the relevant permissions and use these for the installs?
If I have time later this week I will try to do an IRM install just to play with it.
In a message I found Evoir stated:
"Movabletype can work on an IRM as well, just in the flat file mode. I have quite a few sites that use it that way and there are no problems."

Usually what I do, for running CGI scripts on IRMs, is create a subdirectory in my account's cgi-bin for each IRM and place the scripts for that IRM in that subdirectory of the cgi-bin.

It's funny that I have that reputation. I don't feel like an expert! But, yes, it is one install of the script. Go to Settings (on left) and Publishing (across the top). Change the file paths and URL's there. These instructions are for version 3.2, but the same idea applies to earlier versions. Test it out. It works great.
BUT, I am not sure how well the flat file system would work on a really active blog. My sites are not blogs, but actual Web sites that are not growing that fast, or at all. Blogs have a tendancy to be updated much more often... and I have no experience with the stability issues of flat file.
But, have fun. It's a cool program. I just disovered today that you can have it set so the posting date is editable, thus allowing you to change the sort order of the pages in a category. Very nice. Not certain that was available in earlier versions.

Thanks. So I guess we can do mt1, mt, mt3, mt4, mt5, mt6, mt,7 etc. for multiple installs of Movable Type on IRMs?
I was thinking of cancelling a couple of accounts that are not busy at all but i guess I can use them to run IRMs on a couple dozen domains I have parked elsewhere......

I think that for an active blog we would be better off using the basic package and using the MYSQL with Fquest.
But I was thinking of using it just like you on IRMS, to run a few simple websites with no comments or additional authors allowed.
I recently installed the plugin to easily change your themes and I think that's especially cool. I am also using the Better Image Upload plugin.

Now I am a little confused? I think Sheila said she sets up different subdirs in her cgi-bin to run multiple MT powered websites? And you are saying you only set up one copy of the script to run several MT websites?

Hi,
Just a word of caution, for each license, you are only allowed one installation. Even if it is on the same server.
You can have multiple blogs per installation, but only one installation.
I am not sure if this applies to you or not. I had this discussion with Movable Type before.
Hope this information helps.
Best regards,
Kevin

Yes, one install of the script (in the main domain's cgi-bin) and it runs multiple sites, or blogs. Try it out, you'll see. Those instructions where within the installation of MT. Once you have it installed on the main account, login and do what I said above for each blog. It's all in the paths and URLS. Now, your MT licence will dictate how many authors you have licenced. They also have a free licence, which I use. But it only allows 1 author.

Evoir,
Great, we're on the same page. I just thought I would mention it for information sharing purposes. I agree with your comments completely.

Stecyk -- You are more of the MT expert! You wrote up instructions even. I was just posting a quick response.
I've been spending some time the last few days trying to catch up with Rose's photoblog (http://www.dotgarden.com/rose) and I have to say that MT is an impressive piece of software. Version 3.2 is really, really nice. Not sure when they introduced the ability to change the posting date of an entry. Works wonders when you are doing a photoblog and you are 3 months behind on things!

Off-topic, but forgive me...I've been spending some time the last few days trying to catch up with Rose's photoblog (http://www.dotgarden.com/rose) ...She is so adorable! Those curls...wow. And I see you even managed to capture some pics of someone else famous around these parts (http://www.aota.net/forums/member.php?u=1825)...? :)

Oh no, I am far from being an expert. Honestly. I have to email others to get many of my questions answered--basic questions at that. I just stumble along. In all honesty, my MT and web based knowledge leave a lot to be desired. In my defense, I don't have any ambition to be an expert in these areas. I just want to know enough in order that I am able to make my blog do what I want it to do. And that's pretty basic. So please continue to respond to MT questions. I along with others will benefit.
Best regards,
Kevin

I know. I own several MT licenses. Article Manager I own 8 licenses - only one deployed. I should start using good free software like Word Press or Drupal. I waste tooo much money on software ;-)

I think Word Press looks promising. Definitely. But wouldn't work in this instance, because of the MySQL connection. That's one of the beauties of MT, the flexibility to use flatfile on small sites. How did you ever get 8 licences to Article Manager? And what do you think of it? It seems very much like MT, from the outside. It uses a flat file, doesn't it?

I really do not recall. I think it was when they had a sale or something like that. I did not even know I had so many. But I lost my license info and wrote them telling them I thought I had at least two licenses they wrote me back saying I had five (not eight - my mistake). I should have a garage sale on software....

Thanks guys, this helps a lot :) :) I thought I had paid enough so as to install it thrice, but I may have it confused with another product. If I have to I will buy another copy.
