I just had no access to all of FQ for the last 5 mins, was it something on FQ's side or network? Time 2:32pm - 2:37pm GMT.
Hello Pete,
Nothing amiss on this end that we are aware of whatsoever...

Pete - Just a reminder to run traceroute when you can't reach somewhere so at least you know where the problem may be.

You can at least find out if there is an issue between UK & US and/or FQ by using a web-based traceroute service (http://www.traceroute.org/#United%20Kingdom). These include a bunch of broken links, but I just tested the jellybaby one and it works.

My ISP blocks tracert from Windows:Yes, our network routers do end up blocking windows traceroutes. Because of
problems with the Nachi worm two years ago, we implemented a rule to block
ICMP messages with specific traits. Windows ping command works fine, other
traceroute utilities usually work fine, and Unix traceroute command works
fine, but Windows tracert command happens to match that rule, blocking it.
I'm not aware of any plans to relax this restriction, but I will bring it to
engineering's attention to see what they think.

Interesting... seems Windows tracert uses "ICMP echo packets" and Unix traceroute uses "UDP variable port packets". I looked around didn't see any freebee ports of unix-style traceroute, but there probably is one... or you could try to compile one inside Cygwin...?
I did find some payware, like 3d Traceroute Pro, at http://www.d3tr.de/ for $30. Dunno if it's as good as it looks!

I have had the same experience, as described here:
http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18726
I know that my problem is caused by the router that I'm using, as I explain in the discussion above...
I was going to set up a Linux box as a router...in fact I had started on that project...but it got pushed aside for a while. I suppose I will resume with that again at some point.

Thanks for the info Sheila, I did suspect its my router, I have a Linksys wireless and Airport Extreme card in my Mac. For now I can live with it, I'll have to investigate next year :)
