I thought I had this set up just fine, but I was at my parents' place this weekend and noticed it didn't show up right on one of their computers but fine on the other...[nbsp][nbsp]Both are PC's running IE version 4.x.
The "problem" spot is at the bottom.[nbsp][nbsp]You will notice the blue left sidebar that curves at the bottom into a thin horizontal section.[nbsp][nbsp]The bottom section should be uniform across, with a rounded bit at the end.[nbsp][nbsp]Every computer/browser combo I have looked at it on displays this just fine, except for this weekend's surprise.[nbsp][nbsp]It was expanding the middle section with the words to about twice the normal size, even though the text size hadn't expanded to necessitate it.[nbsp][nbsp]The only reason I can think of that it would have done that is to make room for the link???
I probably will just make the bottom section larger to allow for this, but I didn't think it was a problem until Saturday.[nbsp][nbsp]If someone sets the browser to display bigger text sizes, that would certainly cause a similar problem.[nbsp][nbsp]However, I'm not sure I want to plan around that in general, as it throws off pretty much all visual formatting.
By the way, Justin, this is the type of frustration I referred to about IE often treating things differently from one installation to another.[nbsp][nbsp]That's the extent of negativity on my part in this post, so please no one take that as an invitation to a browser war.[nbsp][nbsp];)
If any of you Mac users care to take a look at it, I would be very interested to hear how things look to you.[nbsp][nbsp]Thanks in advance.

Thanks!
Bradley, your bitmap is showing what I feared.[nbsp][nbsp]Only difference is that you got the middle text vertically aligned at the bottom, whereas it was in the middle on the other computer that showed it that way...[nbsp][nbsp]Looks like I'd better change it just to be safe.
Glad to hear things look ok on a Mac![nbsp][nbsp]That's always the great unknown of us PC users.[nbsp][nbsp]:)
Thanks,

Ok here's a screen shot taken in a more "PC" mode, a jpg[nbsp][nbsp]LOL.[nbsp][nbsp]Anyway looks great to me, viewing from a PC, running Win2000 RC-2, at 800 X 600, Netscape 4.7 on a 17 inch monitor. And then, there is the shot from the same machine using IE 5.0, Not as pretty ??????
[nbsp]Hope this helps????

It sounds to me like all PC's you've tried it on have been at 1024 x 768, except for the one where it does not render properly. I have never seen IE render *proper* HTML differently from one installation to the next - it's handling of broken HTML might vary, but this is to be expected (not saying your HTML is broke - have not looked :))
At any rate, resizing it to below 840 pixels (or so) breaks it, anything wider and it's fine.
Hope this helps.

As usual, Justin sems to be correct, when I changed my settings to 1064 X 768 the page rendered correctly in IE 5.0
So it apparently only affects IE users with settings below 800 +[nbsp][nbsp]BUT yet it does render in NS properly no matter what the settings.[nbsp][nbsp]Hmmmm[nbsp][nbsp]Interesting.[nbsp][nbsp]Not trying to start a war here just an observation.

Adding to the above - now I'm looking at the code:
<TD WIDTH="34%" ALIGN="center" valign="middle">&nbsp;<FONT FACE="arial" SIZE="1"><nobr>Designed, Maintained, &amp; Hosted by <a href="http://abledesign.com" target="_blank">AbleDesign.com</a></nobr></FONT>&nbsp;</TD>
&nbsp - tells the browser to put a space - *after* you kill the <nobr> tag (though I would simply take the <nobr> out of it)...
Try getting rid of the &nbsp; from the entire bottom section. For reference, here's a screenshot of the bottom, sized to be broken, with everything selected (reduced to 50% size):
http://www.vdj.net/DKselect.gif
See where the "non breaking space" is on its own line, above the text in the center? That's where it's wrapping, causing the table to become taller...
Hope this helps.
PS - the broken 'puter is probably set with larger fonts, or wider scroll bars (just enough to make the difference), or some other inconsistancy...

Thanks for the detailed analysis![nbsp][nbsp]However, I'm confused why resolution would have anything to do with this...[nbsp][nbsp]I could understand if the text were taking up more space than the resolution setting allowed, but that's clearly not the case from the screenshot.
The reason for the <nobr> was to keep the text from wrapping at low resolution.[nbsp][nbsp]I'd rather have the blue section extend off the screen a bit (it should be fine down to ~500 wide) than have it double up like it unfortunately does in some situations...[nbsp][nbsp]:(
I can't remember why I have an &nbsp; instead of a regular blank space.[nbsp][nbsp]I think I orginally had several spaces to keep the three sections from getting too close together, but later took them out.[nbsp][nbsp]I'm not sure I follow what that has to do with things, though???[nbsp][nbsp]Is it because it's outside of the <nobr>?
At any rate, I'm going to expand the bottom section a bit and take out the unneeded stuff, then try different resolutions and browsers and...[nbsp][nbsp]The good thing is that all 300+ pages on the site are pulling that bottom section from a single text file![nbsp][nbsp]:)
By the way, as far as I could tell, the problematic parental computer was visually standard, i.e. normal font sizes, scroll bars, etc.[nbsp][nbsp]I didn't think to check on it, but I very much doubt they have the resolution set to 1024.[nbsp][nbsp]As Bob said, Netscape doesn't seem to care what the resolution is.[nbsp][nbsp]The only thing that was different looking with their setup is that the top grey toolbar section of IE had some funny squiggly handwriting-looking pattern across it.[nbsp][nbsp]I don't know if this is some sort of customization?[nbsp][nbsp]I've never seen it before.
Thanks again,
Dtale

Oh, I forgot to mention with that last part that my computer is set to 800x600, and the page looks just fine in IE.[nbsp][nbsp]So, I don't think resolution alone is the determining factor.[nbsp][nbsp]For some reason, my browser sizer program is working fine with Netscape but hanging up with IE, so I'm having a little difficulty testing things...

If you're not totally bored with this topic yet...[nbsp][nbsp]Since I cannot duplicate the IE problems for whatever reason (browser sizer decided to start working again), I posted a quick adjustment with only the &nbsp;'s removed:
http://run-down.com/bottom_test.shtml
Does that look any different than before?[nbsp][nbsp]I still plan on adjusting the height of the bottom section, but first I'd like to understand what's going on! ;)
Thanks,
Dan

For me - that seems to have fixed the problem - I can resize it until I get horizontal scroll bars, and the table doesn't get goofy now :)
I think it was because the &nbsp; was outside of the <nobr> tags - I know that should not make a difference considering that there was not much text - but obviously IE thinks differently (no offense to Mac users ;) )
What my next suggestion would have been, though, was to add one new row, with a colspan= however many columns, and placing a single pixel GIF in there with a width of whatever "minimum" table width you would like - this would allow resizing, but would not let it size lower than a certain point (as opposed to using fixed tables)... but of course that's a moot point now, but it's two o'clock in the morning and I am not really fully here hehe :)
