I just downloaded openoffice on my ibook but it doesnt allow me to do anything! What am I missing? I downloaded the v2 for mac os x but the menu options show File > Use Startup Screen which is not active and Edit > Edit Script which does nothing.

I had been using Neo Office but assumed this one would be better.... any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Pete

From what I understand, OpenOffice takes some work to get running on a Mac, because it's an X11 port as opposed to a native OS X app. I haven't tried it myself yet, so I guess this is a good a time as any. I'm dowloading 2.0 right now -- let's see what happens.

The list of Known Limitations in the 1.1.2 release notes (http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/README_OOO.html) was terrifyingly long. Hopefully they've made some progress since then...

OK. At first I was seeing the same thing you described. But then other stuff started to happen. An xterm window opened (if you don't have X11 installed, that would probably be a showstopper), and then a registration wizard came up. Went through that, and now I'm looking at an OO Writer window.

The X11User.pkg is on Tiger disc one, in /System/Installation/Packages.

I haven't spent much time in NeoOfficeJ yet, so I can't really make a comparison at this point. First thing that caught my eye was the rather short list of fonts.

Hi Randall,

Thanks for the reply. I ended up trying v2 and v1.1, during all that I deleted my NeoOffice so at this moment I have nothing. I'm short of time at the momemt, as usual, but I'll probably go back to Neo Office. I do have MS Office on my XP machine and I don't have much use for them on my Mac but it would be useful.

After all the messing about I should have just kept with NeoOffice which was fine. :dunno:

Thanks

Pete
