404.html

I have changed my 404.html page.
It is in the root directory.
I can directly access it on the server as 404.html

But when I follow a fictious link, SIE gives me:

The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
etc...

Instead of my 404.html page.

Is it my browser or a server parameter that needs to be
set?

Tools -> Internet Options
Advanced Tab
Browsing Category
UNCheck "Show Friendly HTTP Error Messages"

That will get rid of most of the 'friendly' pages, including the 404.
