Extra FTP Account Settings Help?

Hi everyone, first post here...

I have a vbulletin forum, (a small one), that I would like to enable a friend to upload onto my account/website.

After looking at the FTP Manager in my C 'N C, for the life of me I cannot figure out what to type into the last field?

The field where it says, Root Directory

I want him to be able to put the forum where ever you normally put a forum, I think the path would read,

http://www.showcargarage.com/forums

So I'm not sure what to do or type in to give him the access and control he needs to upload my forum. I would be grateful is someone could help me to understand.

Thank you!

Mike

To allow him to upload to http://www.showcargarage.com/forums, you would put www/forums

:)

Hi Melissa,

Thank you for your help... so the account I create will look like this?

And this would allow my colleague to upload my vbulletin forum into only the www/forum directory?

Does a person usually need access to any other part of my website account to set a forum up so it is operational?

Thanks!

Mike

Hello Mike,

That looks correct as far as allowing FTP access to just one portion of your account.

I personally am not familiar with installing VB, have done a bunch of different forum solutions but never VB... However some scripts require shell access to install and some do not...

VB does require MySQL access and data base setup so I am not sure that VB could be installed by someone without full account access, or at least your MySQL usrename and password as well as the name of the Database you want to use for VB...

What many folks do is provide full access, username, password, ftp address and CNC address and then when the third party is completed then you would want to change the password for your account in the CNC...

However it may be possible to just provide them with the required MySQL information and the Extra FTP account and them to be successful

Thanks Bob for the quick reply. I mostly just want to make sure I enable the person doing this to have access to anywhere/anything they need to be successful.

If I want to give my colleague complete access, what would I type into the root directory field if anything at all?

Hi again Mike,

If you want them to have complete access you would have to provide them with your Account Username and Password and then you would not need an extra FTP account...

If they need access to your CNC MySQL Manager than the above would be your only option.

Thanks Bob,

I guess the question is then, what access does a person need to install,

vbulletin
vbadvanced
PhotoPost

Hopefully someone with experience in these areas will chime in...

Thanks!

I believe they would need your MySQL access information and an extra FTP Account that leads to the appropriate directory(ies)...

If, however, you can setup the MySQL databases yourself...then the extra FTP Account should do the trick :)
