View Full Version : Free one day only - full (Registered) ad-free Opera browser until 8/31 12:00 a.m.
Not sure how relevant this is since firefox is very very good now and probably the browser of choice, but:

I got my copy early this morning, and I can't say that I'm entirely convinced I should switch from FireFox yet...
I really love a number of the features Opera offers (gestures, voice, viewing multiple tabs at the same time, sessions, and the amazing amount of compactness you can get out of the toolbars) - but I've also found pages load slower in Opera, and there are new rendering problems (things that work fine in IE & FF look off in Opera). I've also had a few times where the browser just freezes for 10-15 seconds before doing anything, which is very annoying. FireFox also handles saved passwords better IMO - and Opera has no auto-complete which can be really annoying at times...
Overall I think it's a good browser, and I will continue to play with it for a while, but I'm not sure if I'll set it as default or leave FireFox in that position...

Thanks, Jeff. I grabbed a copy for my Mac. Not sure if I'll prefer it over Sarari until I give it a thorough workout, but the price is certainly right.
Tom
P.S. The offer has now ended.

If you type "opera" in IE's address bar, the Opera browser opens if it's installed. This displeases Wassercrats.

Norwegian Web browser provider Opera Software has stopped charging users and ditched ads to focus on expanding its customer base and boosting revenue from Internet searches, it said on Tuesday.
Sure I get my "one day only" free version and now it's free to everyone. :hrmm:

Sure I get my "one day only" free version and now it's free to everyone. Well, look at it this way: You got to be special for a while. :winky: Norwegian Web browser provider Opera Software has stopped charging users and ditched ads to focus on expanding its customer base It doesn't surprise me much. With Firefox taking a (small) chunk out of IE with a free browser, it's hard to see how anyone could get traction with commercial product, even an ad-supported one.
I wonder if Eudora will be the next one to take that step, but the email market is a little different.
So, I guess there's no excuse for me to ignore Opera anymore. I'll have to give the latest version a spin on my Mac, see if they've improved on any of the things that turned me off the last time.

Opera was never anything that special except for being the worst of the big three browsers. Theoretically, I can see a commercial browser being worth the cost, but not Opera. I never bothered with their one day offer. I didn't even see it advertised on their website or forum. Just on the blogs of some people who were participating in some Opera publicity contest, and here.
This new free idea won't help them much either. It's going to take some really useful and unique features before Opera can compete.

It's going to take some really useful and unique features before Opera can compete. The zoom feature would be highly useful if it works better than it did a couple of years ago -- scaling the entire page (not just the fonts) is a great idea. I keep waiting for Mozilla to come up with something like that.

Yes, I've praised that feature more than once. I don't know what the problem was a couple of years ago. I even suggested it on the Firefox forum. I just got technical replies from people telling me how to create a webpage that scales like that when using regular text sizing. I think I posted an example here of such a webpage, but the zoom feature is better.
