1000 computers and 5,500 people showed up... another technology riot.

It could have been worse -- the original announcement wasn't restricted to local residents...

Bargain IBooks Trigger Mac Melee (http://wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,68542,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_5) A rush to purchase $50 used laptops turned into a violent stampede Tuesday, with people getting thrown to the pavement, beaten with a folding chair and nearly driven over. One woman went so far as to wet herself rather than surrender her place in line. "This is total, total chaos," said Latoya Jones, 19, who lost one of her flip-flops in the ordeal and later limped around on the sizzling blacktop with one foot bare. I would've taken a shot at it if I lived down there. Probably not to the point of beating people with a chair, though.

I wouldn't have worn flip-flops. When in Rome ... prepare for mass riots.

Whether the machines were worth more than $50 (remember, they've been thrashed, er, gently used by kids for four years) aside, my question is:

Knowing that the school district knew there was going to be at least a little bit of a mob scene (they went to the media to try and convince people not to come), why did they refuse to implement any control measures? I mean, slap a wristband on the first thousand to show up, or do a lottery, like they do for major concerts and sporting events.

It has to be cheaper than defending the inevitable lawsuits from those who've been trampled.
