Similar to Sheila's thread (http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18706), I'm looking to know what apps people are using on Linux. I'm looking for a simple, nice Notepad replacement. I also need another text editor for coding, and that has tab support. What audio and video player is the best in Linux? I've heard of MPlayer but I think that's only for video files. I've heard of xmms also. For a Microsoft Office type software, I think the obvious choice is OpenOffice, but there might be another one out there that I haven't heard about. I'm also looking for a good FTP app. So please let me know what apps you use and why you like them.

I use vim (http://www.vim.org/) as my editor however Scite (http://www.scintilla.org) is also a good choice.
I use xmms as my audio player and mplayer as my video player. Both programs can play both audio and video but they are specialized for one or the other. Xine is also a good video player.
I very rarely use Office type apps but when I do I use OpenOffice. Abiword is also a good choice.
I have seen GUI FTP apps but I have never tried any as I rarely use ftp to download and I never use it to upload.

I tend to use vim (http://www.vim.org/) for short editing tasks, and GNU Emacs (http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/emacs.html) for longer development sessions. I also use xmms for playing audio and either Xine or MPlayer for video, depending on what I'm watching. Xine has a much better user interface for playing DVDs, but MPlayer produces slightly better video quality on my system.
For office software, I've been stuck on Gnumeric for spreadsheets and AbiWord for word processing. My needs in that area are insubstantial, so I don't really miss the extra features that OpenOffice would give, and the above two start up much faster than OO.
