I am trying to put an image (GIF) on my site.[nbsp][nbsp](We got some kind of award from something called dmoz.[nbsp][nbsp]Don't know why or what it is, but it's cute, bright yellow and says we're a cool site, so why not show it?)[nbsp][nbsp]They say to download the GIF.[nbsp][nbsp]I did, and put it on my page and it's fine.[nbsp][nbsp]Then they say "just insert the follow HTML on your page."[nbsp][nbsp]They never tell you where to insert the darned thing.[nbsp][nbsp]I'm sure this is like asking how you peel an apple, but I've tried inserting it in various places and it shows up on the page beside (or above, or below) the GIF.[nbsp][nbsp]I'm using Pagemill, a program that lets you do things in a WYSIWYG way (like cut and paste the GIF right down on the page) but you can also view the source code and change it or insert things in there).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alexandra

Can you post a link to the instructions and/or paste them here?[nbsp][nbsp]Usually "The following code" is just the code needed to place the image on your site so that it links back to the gif giver.
DMOZ -- http://dmoz.org/about.html a very kewl search engine ;)

Thanks, Deb (I knew it was a very kewl search engine because they told me so :), but I still hadn't heard of it.)
The directions are:
"Download this picture by clicking shift-right mouse button:
PICTURE (gif)
and paste the following html onto your page:
<a href="http://dmoz.org/"><img src="coolstar.gif" width=143 height=46 border=0></a>
I did figure out the purpose, but what it does is put on a little box with the link in it NEXT TO the gif, and I can't figure out how to get the gif on top of the code, so that when I click it I get (what will be www.balletalert.com) (http://www.balletalert.com))
Thanks!
Alexandra
That line of code looks fine... when the image is clicked on it would take the user to dmoz.org
Can you show us the page where it is showing up incorrectly?

Deb, thanks.[nbsp][nbsp]I'm not explaining it properly.[nbsp][nbsp]I'm sure the code IS fine; it's me.[nbsp][nbsp]I can't show you the page, because I took the code out.
Let me try again.[nbsp][nbsp]I downloaded the GIF and put it on the page.[nbsp][nbsp]It's there.[nbsp][nbsp]No problem.
Then I inserted the HTML code at what I thought was that same place in the source code.[nbsp][nbsp]What I get is a SECOND box, the same size and shape of the image, with the url written in the middle (I use PageMill; this may be just their way of doing it.[nbsp][nbsp]But the image itself shows up fine.)
I haven't uploaded it because it's obviously not right.[nbsp][nbsp]
Hope this makes sense?[nbsp][nbsp]And thanks very much for your help.

Question... are you putting the image on the page (dragging it on with pagemil) and adding the code to the page?
You only need to add the code (and make sure you have uploaded the image to the server) or only drag the image onto the page (and link it to dmoz.org) but not both...

Yes![nbsp][nbsp](The instructions say "and")[nbsp][nbsp]But I followed your instructions (plopped the gif and made a link, with my URL not theirs) and everything is fine.
Deb, I've run into the same thing with downloading the gifs from Barnesandnoble (I have an affiliate program with them) and other places.[nbsp][nbsp]They ALL say "download the GIF and insert the code.)
Obviously, you should write all web instructions.[nbsp][nbsp]In your copious spare time, of course.
Thanks much.
Alexandra, who now knows you can make a gif a link.[nbsp][nbsp]

You do need to download the gif and insert the code. You were taking an extra step (dragging the image into your HTML editor). No HTML editor is needed - simply download the image (so that you may upload it to your server) and insert the code using a normal text editor.
Hope this helps explain... the main problem is that when you drag the image into your editor, it inserts the image code (but not the link). When you then insert the code, the result is two separate images, one linked and one not.
