I've searched thru the archive on this topic, but wanted some uptodate advice. I'm considering setting up a blog on one of my sites, but I'm looking for suggestions on software. Here are the basic requirements.

1) Something that will run on a shared server without major interference with the server. (FQ staff have comments?)
2) Simple and without feature bloat. I want to post, and allow comments, but comments need to be approved before being published.
3) Open source or free
4) Linux/apache
5) I prefer something that will a) generate static pages b) create search engine friendly urls and c) ping blog update type sites.
6) I don't need dynamic updating. It seems to me it load servers without being needed for what I want to do.

I'm looking at wordpress as one possibility. But I'd really like to get advice, since I don't have time to experiment and switch around if something doesn't "fit".

Thanks

hey,

i can suggest 2: www.movabletype.org (limited free, commercial from 69USD) or www.wordpress.org (free)...

i had them both installed on FQ shared account and found no issues, yet... I find WordPress simpler and more intuitive in the start, but as time passes MovableType is getting better and better (like wine) and in the end I paid for it... also simple and intuitive should change with soon to be version 3.2 ov MT...

hope it helps
regards,
vee

I have been very happy with wordpress. I just ran across a MT site today we are linked to with a lot of trackback spam, I let them know about. They are new at bloging, I am sure MT has ways to stop it.

If you want to look at our implimentations. www.therealiraq.org (run in a inline frame, not recomended), www.NHcafe.org or www.oldhomeday.com all on FQ as Visionary's

We originaly picked wordpress because MT had a security breach at the time. I spent the afternoon fixing one found in wordpress, so it can happen to anyone.

Install and test them, I did and it helped to learn without users looking.

Yes, there are two plug-ins that will virtually eliminate it: SpamLookup and MT-Blacklist.
