KAT,

As a former ValueWeb customer (2 whole months I spent there) I don't regret changing over to FQ one iota. I'm also based in L.A. and I find the connection speeds reasonable. I don't think FQ has switched me over to the uunet backbone yet but I expect it'll be measurably better when that takes place (soon).

The aota forums are incredibly useful and make a good place to learn about all aspects of running a website. You learn at the same time as others here do. Most of us are good at something (but by no means everything) involved in web programming, so you can usually find someone to offer advice to head you in the right direction.

From personal experience I know that the tech people at ValueWeb aren't too hot. In fact ValueWeb is a rather impersonal experience I think you'll find. My advice, cut your losses, pack your bags and head out of there. I'm sure you won't regret it.

My domain is on the new server if you want to run "traceroute"
ncbeach.net (http://ncbeach.net)
Also, to get an overview of all the things that can affect speed (I.E. GO WRONG),
www.internettrafficreport.COM (http://www.internettrafficreport.COM)

Personally, I've been very happy with the speed.

I moved my site from a server that was literally a hop, skip, and jump down the backbone from my ISP (about 40 miles of physical distance) over to FQ. Comparitively, accessing the server is just a sliver slower, but the transfer speeds are the same, etc. You won't notice much of a difference. And FTP uploads are MUCH better compared to ANY host I've been with... Though seven MINUTES to upload a file!? Yikes!
I'm also in California, BTW... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

I just moved my website, mainly photos & midis, from my ISP to ValueWeb. I'm very disappointed in how slowly it now loads, and how long FTPing files takes (just took over 7 minutes to upload a 49k file). Being new to a web host, I don't know if it's just slower to me, because the files aren't on my own ISP, or if the host is slow, or too far away.

I'm in California, a coast away from FQ. Would this make FQ slow for me? I have to say the idea of this forum is really appealing, as is getting a discount for paying a year in advance and no automatic credit card billings.

As introduction: So far my site, katsmeow.com, is my hobby, but I'm taking classes so I can improve it and eventually do sites for clients.

TIA for your comments.
