I need some help fixing a graphic that is used for a header.
link: www.tellersteps.org
the issue is the photo of pikes peak. it looks ok in 1024x764 but when you go up in resolution the image is obviously too small to span the width of the screen.
how are some ways that others have dealt with this?
one option would be not to use a graphic to span the entire header, but Pikes Peak is such a defining symbol of our community that the group really wants/likes it.
thanks for any help.

I usually design for 800 x 600 and center the page, allowing margins on either side to show a background. (Your page cuts off the right column at that size.) You could also center it at 1024 x 764.
Alternatively, you could leave page the way it is and use a gradient mask to allow the image to blend into the background of the header, which you might want to make either the color of the sky or white.

the 800x600 vs. 1024x764 issue is one that I flip-flop on....! i can never make up my mind.
with this site, i think i will go with a "gradient mask" option. as others have suggested that it would look nice.
second question. can anyone point me to a tutorial that would show me how to do such a trick in photoshop 6.0? (I'll go to google now.)
i think i'll be using 800 width centered on my next project...! (or maybe not.)

thanks again snarpy. i found a pretty simple tutorial and think it will work for my needs. i just used the gradient tool and faded it into the color of the sky.

Glad you found a tutorial. I don't have Photoshop  so I was hoping someone else would jump in.

That design is coming along nicely, garyd. :yeah:
I'm with Snarpy on the 800 vs 1024 debate. I know lots of people with big monitors running at 800x600.
And something really odd happens to your header when I shrink the window below that 1024 threshold: The header extends only as far as the width of the window. The other stuff that's running off the edge of the page is still there -- just scroll to the right -- but the header looks like someone tore a hunk off it.

thanks randall... i've been looking at the higher resoutions b/c everyone around here is using a laptop and telling me it looks weird....
the "chunked" off piece of the header is very odd... I'll have to look into it. it must be somthing with my style sheet? I can not remember a time when an image would be cut apart?
thanks again - garyd

I don't mean to quibble, and the photo is very pretty . . . but isn't Pike's Peak in El Paso county? That particular view of it must be taken from somewhere near the Air Force Academy, since you can't see Cheyenne Mountain.
Maybe I'm just confused :confuz: - we only lived there 13 months, and that was 5 years ago - it's entirely possible I've got it all wrong. But if I don't, I'd think the residents of Teller County for sure will know the photo isn't local.

This might help you with the cut-off chunk. The following is a screenshot in Firefox with the table cells outlined in red.

The following is a screenshot in Firefox with the table cells outlined in red. Huh. I don't think I've ever tried to force a table to run off the side of the screen on purpose, so it wouldn't surprise me if this was a longstanding "feature" that I just wasn't aware of. Doesn't seem to be a CSS issue at all, since the table width is set in the HTML.
Eeriely enough, if you've ever tried to force a DIV to run the full length of the page using CSS [height:100%], the result looks a lot like this -- it gets as far as the bottom of the "viewport" and then stops.

Mandi - actually Pikes Peak is readily viewable from Teller County. In fact I live in Divide and personally believe I have the best view of the Peak from any angle. (sometime I'll share some photos off my terrace.)
This specific picture was taken on Hwy 67 just outside of Woodland Park. (on the way back from Denver through Deckers).
Unfortunately (actually fortunately for other reasons) I will be moving back to Kentucky next week. So ny fiance and I are hiking up to the summit starting in Teller County. Start at the Crags campground, hike up banana trail, hike through Devils playground.. and to the summit via the road. the majority of this summit is within Teller County...

Randal and Snarpy,
so my header width is set at 100%, because the screen resolution is 800 I'm assuming the 100% stops at 800? and therefore doesn't flow over as does the content table... maybe something I'll have to live with for now...?
thanks for the help! - garyd

so my header width is set at 100%, because the screen resolution is 800 I'm assuming the 100% stops at 800? and therefore doesn't flow over as does the content table... That's my sense of it. Mixing fixed-width and full-width content seems problematic -- this will happen even on larger screens if the browser window isn't maximized.
The only fix I can think of is somehow incorporating the right-hand boxes (along with the rest of the page) into a master table, ensuring that the boxes will stretch everything to the same width.

Ah, good. I've even been to Woodland Park (bought my car there) and still didn't manage to remember the view, LOL. Should have asked Coastie Guy before posting, he'd have remembered - he is also Land Rover Guy, and belonged to an offroad club there - he'd have remembered for sure :).

here's a couple photos from our climb.
http://www.ditschfitness.com/images/peak2.jpg
about 12,000 feet looking at the Collegiate and San Luis mountain ranges.
http://www.ditschfitness.com/images/peak1.jpg
about 200 feet from the summit. had to take pictures here before I got to all the cars and people that were at the top
we probably saw 50 people hiking the summit from The Crags side... some made it, others did not (or not that we saw?) hiking time up, 4.5 hours... :confuz: down 2 hours (it hurt worse doing down!) :wah:
