View Full Version : You, too, can report yourself as spam

America Online launched a free, web-based e-mail service, departing for the first time from a fee-based subscription model in a move to compete with free, and increasingly large, e-mail accounts offered by the likes of Google and Yahoo.

AOL said the service will provide users with 2 GB of storage, along with protection against viruses and spam. <<< Run, Luke! Run! >>>

Well, look on the bright side of things: Next time you have trouble sending mail to AOL users, you can set up an account and do your own troubleshooting.

Just a lil something to ponder...

Most people don't know that a 1986 law gives LESS protection from government searches to messages more than six months old, said Ari Schwartz, an associate director at the Center for Democracy and Technology.(emphases on LESS added by me)"If you don't have a reason to keep a bunch of data around, it's probably prudent to get rid of it," said Stewart Baker, a Washington lawyer who has represented ISPs in law-enforcement matters. I doubt I myself could read that much email within a 6 month period.... and I'd never "leave mail on the server" for any extended length of time. No more than a few hours if I'm around and no more than a week or two regardless. That's a personal preference of course but outside of spam traps I'm often stunned by the amount of email messages and files that are stored on the mail servers. Personally, I advise against it and therefore am not particularily thrilled with the storage limits (lack thereof) that have come forth. Not because of competition but because my paranoid self feels it's setting some folks up for a huge fall if their storage is lost somehow, becomes locked up in a legal battle, or some other such event that affects their privacy.

- I've always preferred to store "My Stuff" in "My Own Home" as much as possible.

If I ever fear someone might subpoena my email, I'm turning my catch-all back on. I'd like to see the face of my enemy when he's handed a legal bill for the tens of thousands of emails his lawyer had to read. It would probably be a government employee who's reading it and I don't suppose the government cares about bills. :hrmm:
