View Full Version : Funny Netscape Videos
Today we launched the new Netscape 8 browser which has several new tricks up its sleeve...
Along with the launch, we released some really funny internet movies which also features the new-style Netscape.com site that we launched a few weeks ago.
Click on the PC monitor in the popup player (the 'Netscape Cubicle') to see the office silliness movies:

Those look like they were produced by the same people who produced the Firefox ads ( http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?t=19500 ). Not enough connection with the browser. "It doesn't have to be like this?" So, if you have a good browser, you'll work all the time and not goof around? You'll stay sane? I don't get it. I guess it means things go right with Netscape, unlike with other things. I don't like it, but I guess it's funny, if you don't think these are actual videos of people getting hurt.

After viewing these, and with the assistance of my spouse, we decided that...
The people in these videos are being idiots, which leads to injury.
The video is telling you, "You don't have to be an idiot. Instead, you could use Netscape."
Interpreting what "idiot" browser choice behavior might be is left as an exercise for the reader. :teach:
I did like the window-washing one. That one made me laugh.
OK, the pogostick one got a chuckle too.
I don't think it's all that serious and need of so much analysis. It's just funny, a little hip and something to get a smile out of.
There are also some silly cards and some little games on there too.

Sorry, Tom. I get in trouble for taking things too seriously all the time.
I'll try to be a little more hip. :P
Uh, maybe I am blind which would not be the worst of my afflictions, but I don't seem to see a pop-up player

Betsy, do you have a pop-up blocker running? You would need to turn it off (unless it provides some way for you to select pop-ups that were blocked afterwards).
Opera has a "trash can" icon, and I can select to view blocked pop-ups, so that's how I got to the page...

I forgot that you worked for Netscape, Tom! Congrats on the new feature that lets you choose between Mozilla and IE rendering. I was thinking all the main innovations had already happened in browsers, but this was a pleasant surprise. I may have to download it and take it for a spin :)

Yeah, that was it. I would suggest that is a problem Tom and company may want to consider if the new netscape browser employs pop-ups like that.
I couldn't help but wonder which one of those people in the videos is Tom.

I have to admit that the birthday video had some good screaming. :clown:

TVB, I didn't have a hand in this popup presentation (I work on the portal), but here 'tis in a flat browser window:
http://netcenter.netscape.com/netcenter/promo.jsp?ls=3
And since I didn't have a hand in it, I'm not in any of the videos, but if I were, I might be the guy pushing the cart down the hall into the window, turning the other way when the boss steps in....
As for the browser, it has a ton of new configurable things for individual sites or groups of sites. Our art people had a contest cooking up themes/skins for it and came up with 30 or 40 really good ones that I hope will come out soon.

I just got spam from Netscape titled "New Netscape 8.0 Security Browser." The bottom says "You received this e-mail message because you are registered for one or more of Netscape's products and services."
How do I find out what product or service Netscape claims I'm registered for?

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,121023,00.aspMicrosoft is advising users of Netscape 8 to either uninstall the software or edit their computer's Registry files because of a bug in America Online's new browser.
According to a Microsoft engineer, Netscape 8 disables the XML (Extensible Markup Language) rendering capabilities in Internet Explorer, meaning that some Web pages will not be visible in IE after Netscape 8 is installed.
Wassercrats - you probably created a screenname either for web mail or AIM or something like that. The marketing settings can be changed here:

I assume these Vonage ads (http://www.vonage.com/commercials.php) were the inspiration for the Netscape videos. I've read complaints about them depicting injury, and I don't like that genera, but there's a clearer message selling the product in the Vonage ads.

Tom, do you know why NS8.0 crashes about 2 seconds after it loads? I'm using Windows XP Home and no other program or browser does this. Its a pity, I really wanted to take it for a spin but its obviously not ready for prime time yet :(
phppete - I haven't had any crashes of the released version of the 8.0 browser and haven't heard of any behavior as you describe. If you have the feedback installed and turned on, I believe it sends off what happened. I work over on the portal side but know the browser managers and will ask.

I just did a clean install of it and the same thing happens, it just crashes. How do I turn feedback on?

If you have any ideas I would be pleased to hear them, I would like to use this browser, at least for testing.
Thanks

Pete -
The browser guys told me they hadn't seen what you describe, and I just passed along your dump to them -- that should help. The feedback thing is something that you select during the install -- I think it's called 'feedback Agent'.
They asked if you might be running any antivirus that could be conflicting. I run Norton at home and McAffee at work and haven't seen either of those cause any issues, so I'm not so sure on that.

I use AVG AV, the feedback agent is on but not working when it crashes which probably explains why NN think it doesnt happen. When the feedback doesnt kick in how would they know? I really would like to use the browser but I'll wait until they sort out the issues (if they ever do).
I have IE5, IE5.5 IE6, IE6 Eolas Beta, NN3 Gold, NN4.06, NN 4.73, NN6, NN7, Moz 1, FF, Opera 5, 6, 7, 8 running on this machine and only NN8 is causing issues.
Thanks for your help anyway.
There definitely are more versions coming -- they're very aggressive on the development again.
