Why bother seeing the world for real? (http://www.googlesightseeing.com/)

This is great, I've just been exploring my new neighborhood from the air, sometimes actually experiencing vertigo...

Finding places I've lived, down to the actual building, back yard features, etc is quite easy... dizzyness aside.

The resolution in most parts of Connecticut is too low to spot anything recognizable, but I've done some exploring of other places (not to mention Dork Street (http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?postid=131912#post131912)).

I found Disney World a while ago but Epcot was trickier. I was looking for something in the immediate vicinity, but tonight I got smart and followed the monorail lines (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=disneyland&ll=28.373694,-81.550344&sll=28.538056,-81.379444&spn=0.008122,0.010664&sspn=0.132179,0.174065&t=k&hl=en)...

Also looked for turtle ponds in Oviedo, but no dice. :dunno:

The resolution is too low for me too: "We're sorry, but we don't have imagery at this zoom level for this region"

Anyway, http://maps.google.com/ (click "satellite") is the web page we seem to be interested in more than http://www.googlesightseeing.com/ .

This is 300% of the map's largest image. I'm at the end of a cul-de-sac next to an arroyo (safely above any possible flood level). This image is over a year old, the lot across the street is now occupied by a building like this one, a new sub-division.

You can see the darker landscaping stone and lighter roof compared to the next door neighbor.

The resolution in most parts of Connecticut is too low to spot anything recognizable...That's so true. Makes it hard to drive there... I keep missing exits 'cuz I can't read the signs.

That's so true. Makes it hard to drive there... I keep missing exits 'cuz I can't read the signs. That's what happens when you leave your bifocals at home.

Just look for the traffic jam. I've yet to visit the nutmeg state without sitting in at least one.

In fact, I bet there are traffic jams evident on the google photos.

It's a small state...what do you expect? I bet Rhode Island has even worse resolution.

So states have pixels allotted according to population but the clock speed is constant by area leaving the smaller states less well defined.

This is unfair, though being in a larger state I certainly can see the problem much more clearly. If any of you small state dwellers need this explained just let me know.

Google can't see my house. The box is the approximate property lines for our 10 acres. Very approximate.

You can see why I've got those trees in my avatar.

Makes a nice contrast with Andi's desert, eh?

This next image was taken with Flyboy at the controls, about a year and a half ago. We are flying more or less south.

And from directly above. This was during a drought.

Makes a nice contrast with Andi's desert, eh?Yes. indeed. The desert is very low maintenance. I water the cactus once a month... They are all blooming now though, quite exotic. Los Angeles too is a desert, but not quite like this...

I guess I just lucked out with the hi-res, but my homes in SF, LA and Marin all came out hi res too. Couldn't find it in Illinois... Must be the big state thing.

edit: just found the Illinois house, lower res than NM though...

I bet they sell cactus juice there. I hate cactus juice, even when heavily sweetened.

I bet they sell cactus juice there.Never saw it here, but I did try cactus in a jar from Mexico several years ago. It made me sick, had little taste.

Those Google pictures are several years old. The photos for our area (the town anyway) date from between 1998 and 2002, and I think it is closer to 1998. The nuclear plant also doesn't show any of the post-911 changes, so I think the dates for it are about the same.

The date on the city inspection tag for the furnace here is Feb. 2002 which dates that picture, since construction seems to be finished and landscaping done--the a/c unit on the roof is visible.

But many there are many houses to the west and two on this block which do not even appear as foundations, though all the lots and streets seem plotted out and visible.

The retaining wall along the arroyo is 18 inches thick and it is clearly visible, though some of the apparent thickness may be its shadow--it is about 15 feet high on the arroyo side and much thicker at its base. The driveway runs to a two car garage and is about 12-15 feet wide, it is very visible.

Makes a nice contrast with Andi's desert, eh? There are a few high-res areas around here (mostly major cities), but the trees were bare at the time. So you have these sharp brown rectangles surrounded by blurry green stuff. Yes. indeed. The desert is very low maintenance. I water the cactus once a month... I see some green areas down there. Looks like farm land.

Oh well, at least it's not golf courses. Never saw it here, but I did try cactus in a jar from Mexico several years ago. It made me sick, had little taste. I think I had a cactus salad once. Wasn't bad. Those Google pictures are several years old. Yes, I read that most (all?) of the photos go back to 2002. Maybe the commercial stuff they sell is more current. It's a small state...what do you expect? :ras1:
