View Full Version : Can someone explain...

Here's what happened:

1- I made a few changes on several of my pages, nothing really important: links, <alt> and so on.
2- I uploaded those pages with Cute FTP
3- I realized that the result was a rather strange mixture of the two versions of my pages, and that I suddenly had two </html> tags, one of which was of course displayed on the screen.
4- I downloaded the file and understood that the source had been *mysteriously* changed during the transfer.
5- After 15 or 20 uploads, the pages looked fine.

hehe - I've been using Cute FTP forever, and the one drawback is that it will not overwrite an ASCII file - it appends to the end of it.

All you have to do is delete the file on the server before re-uploading it. I always do that.

I think it's a bug in Cute FTP, or they just didn't leave an option to change this behavior. But notice that in the log window, the command it sends is APPE filename. That's telling the server to append, not overwrite.

Thanks, Justin! I feel a bit less stupid, now.

For that very reason I've stopped using Cute and started using the excellent Leap FTP which gives you a lot more information on what is going on with your transfer.

Personally I don't mind the simple bug - I've just been using CutpFTP for so long that I'm used to it. No big deal. Besides, it's so cute!!

I'm kidding. But there's that, and the fact that I already bought that one and don't want to buy another FTP client. There are other minor problems with it, but I guess once you are used to the bugs in one program, you don't want to learn the bugs in another (every program in the world has bugs, well, except for mine!!).

My 0.0027493 cents (being frugel today)
