View Full Version : Which html editor do YOU use?

Quick survey: what do you use to design your pages? Do you prefer hand-coding, wysiwyg, or a combination of both? Why did you choose your particular editor?
My own answers: I currently use Netobjects Fusion v3.0. For me, you just can't beat wysiwyg for creating sites fairly quickly, and keeping a consistent look and feel to your pages.
Also on my HD is Homesite v4.0... this is used primarily to "touch up" the code that NOF generates.
I chose NOF because it allows for exact positioning of page elements, lets me carry a consistent theme to subsequent pages, and lets you tailor the output html for specific browsers.

i have tried various programs.. I cannot stand Microsofts Front Page! When i am laying out a site really quick like.. I use Netscape composer.. and it has a built in editor.
The only thing I don't like about netscape composer is: It puts too much extra code in the html file.. so.. I go and clean it all out.. like nbsp; and <font> and <center> settings i see no reason why these have to be repeated over and over.
I don't mind using it cuz it is handy and it is free! http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif But for the most part.. I prefer editing and designing in notepad and/or directly from wsftp (while online)
There is one other that I have tried, and that is ACE EXPERT. It has all kinds of neat little added features, and is great for beginners. You can check your work from either browser while you are working.. ya just tell it either Netscape of MSIE.
Since I am wanting to completely understand what it is I am doing.. I would prefer NOT to have a program to do what I need to know inside and out.
It seems over time, the more I tend to write the code from scratch.
*my two cents worth*

Hi,
I'm using HomeSite 1.2. It's the old Freeware Version of Homesite and it is in fact not more than a notepad with syntax highlight for HTML and a nice set of assistants for the most common tasks.
I once took a look at Homesite 3, but found that it did not add enough to justify the price.
I can very well happen that I switch over to UltraEdit very soon. It's a great editor with the capability of syntax highlighting everything (including PERL).
At the moment, I have the feeling that all this is not sufficient to manage a larger site. I need something that can really separate content from design. I did a design study for a new software which generates my chess pages. I believe that I turn that into a nice shareware program http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Okay I have to be the bizarre one here. I actually use AOLPress, which is a free program that was offered by AOL. (I started out hosted on AOL so that might explain some things). The great part on AOL was the program could save directly to my AOL space. Didn't have to make local copies, but that backfired on me when I decided to move to FQ. Had to go back and download everything and re-write every page almost from scratch.
It's pretty great for me since it's WYSIWYG and fully supports HTML code editing. I generally code my stuff but use the wysiwyg to check the look of things before saving to hd and then the server.
The problem with AOLPress is that AOL isn't supporting it anymore with updates and such. It only supports up to html 3.2 but I design for backwards compatability like crazy so it currently is fine for me. Am looking at switching to another program....anyone heard anything about HotMetalPro?
Oh if you want it the address for AOLPress is: http://www.aolpress.com/

I would like to try out DreamWeaver when I have more time though...
I've been using DW2 for a few weeks now. Best features, IMO, are: it rarely monks around with the code - layers & DHTML - modularity (look at some of the DW sites and see the enhancements in the form of "behaviors" and "objects" that users have developed) - ability to put a Photoshop "markup" file, with variable transparency, in your editor window and design your page on top of the image, as if on tissue paper (have not tried this). Worst features: site management and ftp functions need to be improved - price!
I'm now Netload and UltraEdit to make up for some of it's weak points but on the "cool" scale it still ranks about an 8.

I have to say that Arachnophilia is the best one out there. It has this really handy feature that tells you if you forgot a bracket or something with color coding. It has saved errors many a times.

We use UltraEdit (until the trial period runs out and it locks up anyway http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif ) would love to get it registered if only the gosh darn exchange rate wasn't so .... grrr....
ahem
we also use NoteTabLight, which is freeware, although there is a NTStandard and Pro which are shareware with time trial.
we usually work with the raw code, and use the browser preview function in UE

they sure do thats why peole hand code to tweek em - and you cant easily do things like forms and such without handcoding - well you cant do them at all without hadncodoing.

I started with HotDog Pro... from there got lazy and went to FrontPage....
FrontPage kept me 'lazy'... slowly I migrated to a mix of "starting in FrontPage then finishing with notepad"..
Now I only use www.UltraEdit.com (http://www.UltraEdit.com) http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I would like to try out DreamWeaver when I have more time though...

My current weapon of choice is Macromedia Dreamweaver 2, using Notepad as an external html editor and photoshop 5 as the external image editor. I also sparingly use NOF and homesite for html. Also I use MS Frontpage for contructing framesets quickly. I also think DW is about an 8 on the cool scale.

I've used WPC [Web Page Creator] since I started creating real web pages...er..verses the early days of Tripod's free Homepage Builder... http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif boy, were those some awful looking pages...
But, WPC is the best, it taught me the HTML needed while I created pages...unlike some of the WYSIWYG programs and it only costs $20. Now I also use SiteAid, a freeware program, if I'm copying information from one of my pages to the another. SiteAid has a tab system where I can simply hop back and forth. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

I like to use Homesite v2.5. They're up to v4.0 now, which I just got, but set aside after a day. It looks nice, but lotsa new stuff to learn. Maybe someday when I've got more time. Until then, I'll stick with the 2 year old version that I'm used to, and know like the back of my hand http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif. I also like to open up a page in good old NotePad, directly from CuteFTP when there's a quick edit to make here or there.
Tried FrontPage once, and didn't really understand it. lol. Same with the Netscape composer I happened to open up last night, to see how it would display one of my pages. It looked like a mess to me. I think I use too many comment tags for it because there were these yellow looking graphics all over the place. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif My partners in crime around here use Hotdog Pro, and Dreamweaver when they edit stuff (....rarely).
Believe it or not, I actually spent 3 and a half weeks hand coding our celeb site last August/September. My serious attempt to try and put together something original by hand that didn't look like everything else out there. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif 3 1/2 weeks looking at 1 page over and over. lol. Cause really, you don't want to go on making the rest of the darn site until you get that first template juuuuust right. Learned a lot about HTML by doing that too (so much that I was able to re-design our other site in less than a day). I also learned that picky people, and HTML don't go together very well. lol. Amazing how something you create, and like one day, can annoy you enough to change/tweak it the next..and the next..and the next... so much, that you actually lose sleep over it.
Oh, and don't get me started on the whole Internet Explorer/Netscape HTML differences. HA. I'm sure some of you have designed a cool layout that looked PERFECT in one, only to find out it looks like garbage in the other. PLUS the fact that those 2 aren't the only browsers in the world! Those of you that haven't yet. It'll happen! Seems to happen to everyone at one point or another.
Happy Coding! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
