I have a directory full of "Computer Modern PostScript Fonts" in pfm format. What do I do now? Where's this Windows Font Manager that I've heard about? Is there better, free font management software that I should use?

Drag the .pfm files into your C:\Windows\Fonts folder and they'll install automatically.
Hopefully you also have the .pfb files that go along with them, or they won't work. But you only need to drag the .pfm files into Fonts -- Windows does the rest.

You can also do it manually Settings>Control Panel>Fonts then File>Install New Font...

Thanks, I dragged them. Now I have more fonts that I'll never use.

By the way, the Windows folder is called WINNT on my computer.Hopefully you also have the .pfb files that go along with them, or they won't work. The directory containing the .pfm file directory contained the .pfb files. Now that the fonts are installed, could I delete all of those original files?

Now I have more fonts that I'll never use. When you die, you will be judged by the number of useless fonts you've acquired -- the uglier, the better. By the way, the Windows folder is called WINNT on my computer. That's the norm for Windows NT and 2000. Not so common for XP... Now that the fonts are installed, could I delete all of those original files? Yup. :winky:

Unless you upgraded from NT or 2K to XP.

I didn't upgrade, but who knows what Gateway did to this computer before I bought it.
That font install went so well that I think I'll install AMSFonts. They're both here (http://www.ams.org/tex/type1-cm-fonts.html). And I have my eye on these (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gs-fonts) Ghostscript fonts, which I'm sure to never use because I'm scared of ghosts. It's supposedly for Windows, but it's tar.gzipped, so I might have to add gzip support to my tar utility, which I forgot why I created, but I know I didn't have a good reason, so everything fits together nicely.

Unless you upgraded from NT or 2K to XP. But then, you could have chosen to install in a new folder, in which case it could be anything at all.
Next time, I think I'll install it in Swodniw. And I have my eye on these (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gs-fonts) Ghostscript fonts, which I'm sure to never use because I'm scared of ghosts. Between the fonts in Windows and whatever came with your printer, you may have variations on these fonts already.
I can't get them to open in Windows anyway.

Yeah, but the names matter. I use Microsoft fonts like Trebuchet MS, and I want to add the *nix equivalent to my CSS if I could find one. I refer to http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html sometimes, but it doesn't mention *nix.
I also like some of the new ones I got. At 14 pt, I noticed that my new LCMSSB8 is similar to but slightly bolder than Verdana and Zurich Ex BT, but not as bold as the bold versions. Sometimes I look for the right level of boldness. MS Works won't let me see Verdana or Zurich Ex BT at 15 pt. Unfortunately, the spaces are tilted dashes, but LCMSSB8 is an option for images.

Bitstream Vera Sans (http://www.gnome.org/fonts/) is intended to be an open source Verdana substitute (you have to include the "Bitstream" part of the name in the CSS). It's relatively new, but starting to show up in Linux distributions.
In the past I've used it as my default browser font in Windows, but the letterspacing looks wrong with ClearType turned on. I still use Vera Sans Mono in my text editor, since letterspacing isn't an issue there.
