Hi
just signed up & waiting for my domain name to be active. Is there a way to set up email so I can still keep (recieving)the same email address from my ISP? like maybe email forwarding? this is new to me so hopefully I am explaining it right. I want to have a domain email ( name@mydomain.net) but I still want to recieve email through my regular (netscape program) email address and keep my email address from my isp

Thanks in advance :-)

When your account is set up, you'll be able to access the Command n Control panel via www.you.com/CNC (if you're using your own domain name). There's a section of the CNC that lets you manage all your email boxes, forwarders and aliases.

'Out of the box', all emails not otherwise specified go to your login_name@yourdomain.com. In other words, if you've got your main mailbox at login_name@you.com and two forwarders, jose@you.com and hoseb@you.com, and someone sends an email to ralph@you.com, it'll go to login_name@you.com by default. (Did that make any sense? If not, email me at del@downinit.com and slap me)

ROFL!!!

I've often considered trying to sell a lil plastic hand that attaches to the side of the monitor. Upon remote command it can reach out and thawke ya one http://www.aota.net/ubb//smile.gif

Del... if you had this hand on your monitor would I be able to utilize the remote? *g*

As far as EMail -- The key here is to have a program that checks multiple boxes... e.g. Netscape wont do that (as far as I know)

I suggested Eudora... any other suggestions? I know pegasus is doing pretty good in that area too....

Del..slap! LOL..I do appreciate the info but I need it in more "Fisher Price" terms :-)
*thinking that freemall@yahoo.com is much easier* LOL

Actually, we've been using the one yahoomail account for all our addresses, Susogi.net addies included, but lately it's been really slow, lots of error and "try later" messages -- I think we'll be looking for another web-based email account, or maybe even trying one of those non-web ones Deb mentioned, to see how they work. We had some version of Eudora before but we really didn't like it.

Take care,

pegusis mail is another one yuo can try that its freebie but I dunno I dont got the patientce to learn a whle new program and I like having my email right on y borwser makes like easier - I have a gajillion emails (thanks to rabbitrescue.org ugh!) and I have evrythign in netsacepa dn I dont really have the energy to set up other accounts on a whole nother program so like I just go into preferences every now and again and download the mail off the varios servers I'm on -
I have a little nifty program called sbpop that just check mail boxes and downloads headers - so I know what mail I gotta download.

Hey bekariso - man don't go with netscape it's waaaaay slower than yahoo-
crud there awas a new freebie webbased mail that came out but I dont remember the name dangit!
um what deb and all coul;d do someday is set up a webmail interface for your clients and stuff if they are so inclined so that you can check you pop3 mail also thru that web interface - my provider has this - not fancy by any means compared to yahho with all them folders and stuff but gets the job done when I'm either away freom home or liek too lazy to keep changing hte server names on netscape - man I think netscape should make it work with mulitple POP's that would kick butt!

Nutscape 4.05 (that's what we use) can sort of check multiple pop mails. Only drawback is you have to have a seperate 'profile' for each one...

Dont forget, Hotmail can be configured to check pop mails too. That's what we use for the many many times we check email away from home (even tho hotmail sucks since M$ bought em).

Deb, indeed, you can have a remote for the little hand thinger. Just play nice :-) (and keep it away from terra)

I think with netscape you have open a new browser each time you want to check different email right?

hmm would I still have to reconfigure my regular pop email to check different email addresses with hotmail?
(wondering if that makes sense!)

I agree..hotmail is yucky since ms got it :-(

I went to Eudora's site and they also offer free web based email but I'm not sure if it checks pop email

Del

Sort of. Actually, you have to shut down the whole browser (all active windows), and start it up again. It's a pretty roundabout way of doing it. Eudora or Pegasus should be more than sufficient to check multiple popmails.

One Hotmail account can check up to 5 different pop mail boxes. Pop mail clients will not check hotmail (unless you pay for the service, which isn't a good idea. Bill doesn't need any more money).

Don't forget you're allowed multiple forwarders too, you can set up lotsa different email addresses, but have them actually deliver to whereever you want them to go. I only have one popmail right now, but I have at least 47 different forwarders that all end up at one of two hotmail accounts :-)

Keep slapping me til I make sense http://www.aota.net/ubb//smile.gif

Thanks Del http://www.aota.net/ubb//smile.gif

actually forwarders sound much easier
but then you can't send mail that way..

no slap this time http://www.aota.net/ubb//smile.gif
you are a big help
my domain isn't active yet,but I assume I can set up forwarders in the mydomain./CNC that is provided by futurequest?
(my email is temperamental..thats why I'm hesitant to mess with the settings & am waiting for a new pc to arrive so I don't want to do too much to this one that I will have to change all over again)
and no way would I give Bill a penny http://www.aota.net/ubb//frown.gif

oops one more question (for today anyway *L*)
ok hotmail can check 5 pop emails but can I set up the email addys in hotmail or do I still have to change settings in my regular pop email acct for hotmail to check it?

I owe ya http://www.aota.net/ubb//smile.gif

Hiya Sandy,

The CNC isn't usable until the domain propogates http://www.aota.net/ubb//frown.gif

BUT!!!! From what I am seeing on this end that has happened and your domain IS ready to go according to Internic....

I would HIGHLY suggest rebooting your machine a good hard reboot and then open your browser and try to get to http://www.thefreemall.net if you see your temporary page there try going to http://www.thefreemall.net/CNC (you'll need the username and password to enter this area) from there you can begin setting up POP accounts and Aliases...

Let me know if this works for you
Deb

p.s. don't worry about sending a check to Del... looks like I'm going to have to do that sooner or later http://www.aota.net/ubb//wink.gif We'll have him adminning these forums and stuck in tech support email in no time lol

Hi Deb

just rebooted..still getting the 'no dns entry' thing http://www.aota.net/ubb//frown.gif
ok who has clout with internic? LOL

I wanna be on the payroll too when I figure all this out LOL

Deb

Hrrmmm then this would be a problem with your ISP still caching the DNS entry.

Which seems kind of strange... are you going through proxy server... do you know?

Some ISPs do have a ridiculously long cache time.. but eashhh...

Terra's doing a query on your name servers etc now....

If any one else is awake can you let us know if you see www.thefreemall.net ...

Will post again once I have some suggestions from Terra.

Thanks Deb http://www.aota.net/ubb//smile.gif

no proxy that I know of..I rebooted, cleared the cache just in case that would help & still don't see it.
My isp is earthlink if that means anything

I can try & call them about it but somehow I doubt if that will help.

Eeeeshh, guess it's time for me to throw my hat into the ring...

From what I see, you are using an 'earthlink.net' connection... You have access to 3 DNS servers for resolving hostnames to IP's...

I did some digging on earthlinks DNS servers and found some interesting results... I have seen this a few other times with earthlink customers...

EarthLinks.net DNS
1) ns1.earthlink.net
2) ns2.earthlink.net
3) ns3.earthlink.net

Ok -- as it stands now -- I was trying to "Inject/Prime" your domain into their DNS... I was only successful with "ns1.earthlink.net" -- the other 2 would not accept the update...

This will cause intermittant problems - with resolving names... It's the luck of the draw as to which "ns?" server you might query from...

Tomorrow - call their tech support and have them run these commands...

'host -v -r thefreemall.net ns1.earthlink.net'
'host -v -r thefreemall.net ns2.earthlink.net'
'host -v -r thefreemall.net ns3.earthlink.net'

My luck the last 2 DNS servers will have updated by then, and the above commands will all complete successful... :-/

There is not much more we can do unless you are feeling VERY adventurous, and feel like mucking around with 'HOSTS' file, to possible override this earthlink limitation...

Oh wow, what I meant to say -- is that I did a --whole-- bunch of stuff (magical stuff) to earthlink's DNS servers and should --hopefully-- be working for you now...

Please go test it and let me know the results... Thanks...

Hi

I'm not sure if that means that it's working now since I saw the test page or if I still need to call earthlink and tell them what you just said..

Also..this is a real stupid question..
what do I name my main page so it shows up and I don't have to type "index.html" to see it
(still have to upload all the images so the page looks a mess) but I got it to come up as thefreemall.net/index.html but not sure how to do it so I don't need to type in the last part.

Thanks for all of your help!!

Sandy

LOL!!!
actually the "magical stuff" makes much more sense http://www.aota.net/ubb//smile.gif

Deb

First : It seems like everything just updated for you (because of Terra's magic of course *g*) IF you are up to it you can call and report what happened.. but unless you continue to have problems you can let it be if you like....

Now... What to name the home page?

I'm going to go ahead and close this thread and start a new one as this one is full of info and gaining and I'd like to separate some of the things.. especially since what to the name the home page seems it should be in our FAQ (the one I've yet to build lol) http://www.aota.net/ubb//wink.gif
