FTP keeps disconnecting me! Argh!

Okay, had a nice long explanation typed out, then tried to summit and found out that my susogi registration is no good, I need a separate registration to post here, fine, but it wouldn't even let me cut and paste my old post. Argh.

So. I'm doing a massive renovation of our site, uploading about 2 dozen pages which all seem to have tiny glitches in them that take about 2 minutes to fix and upload, but my FTP connection disconnects every 10 minutes, telling me I've been idle that long, even though I'm not certainly *not* idle! Is this the program messing with my mind, is it a glitch, is it just the way it works? It's so frustrating!

I'm using LeechFTP now, I know, horrible name, but it's freeware (snagged from the software library at zdnet). We couldn't afford to keep Cute with the US-Canadian exchange rate what it is -- we'd have to go without heat for a month to afford it! :-P

Can anyone offer info? Advice? Moral support?

Hi Bekariso,

Yes, it's a server rule... if you are not moving on the server for anything over 600 seconds then it automatically disconnects you because it considers you are tying up a port.

I know it can be annoying but it is the way it is due to many ppl forgetting to ever disconnect and leaving ports tied up for long periods of time for no reason.

I get snagged by it all the time myself.. but it's a common limitation regardless of where you are...

Some programs you can set to move on server automatically to prevent this... others have an auto-reconnect if disconnect... not sure about yours...

But if not moving for 600 seconds on the server it'll dis ya...

Hey Deb, thanks for replying so quickly.

I understand why it would disconnect me if I'm idle, that's fine. What's annoying is that I'm certainly not idle. I can do something every minute for 10 minutes, and then suddenly get disconnected right after the tenth upload, for example. Is that supposed to happen?

By the way, did you get Reiya's email last week? Not sure what addy she sent it to . . . it was about we have a new ICQ number and we'd still like to help with Susogi.net if you'll have us back.

Ok, being disconnected while you are active that isn't supposed to be happening but that area isn't on the server side.

You may want to check out the Utilities/Programs forum and look into some of the other FTP programs we've suggested over there... many freeware ones to try out...

As far as email.... Of course we'd love to have ya back.... possibly send me another email?

I will look for other FTP programs when I get this de-bugging done -- almost there now . . . and I find I have accepted and come to peace with my disconnectedness. I know I am still a productive and non-idle person, and so I am free to accept the FTP connection just as it is, for I know it is not out to get me . . . . ;-)
