View Full Version : Busted Little IE Images

I'd swear I saw a post on this somewhere on FQ, but darned if I can find it.

The problem...

When I visit any site with Internet Explorer on XP that uses repeated instances of the same small image in a page, they show up busted -- until I right-click and do a Show Image.

Anyone remember the IE fix for this?

Thanks!

Lol... yeah, but not the solution I had in mind.

They also ought fix the JavaScript errors and the busted links on their site.

This has been annoying me for a couple of years now (I have a considerable threshold for pain).

I've chased it around for hours in the s/e's and at u$'s knowledge debase -- nada.

Somebody around here'll probably know, though!

There's a bunch of stuff here (http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/pid/608/qid/538850). I Googled for "show image" "internet explorer" bug (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22show+image%22+%22internet+explorer%22+bug). It's the first result, titled Browser issues for IT professionals - Internet Explorer Missing (I've become pessimistic about links working).

Yes, I'd seen that link in my travels, thanks; and tried all appropriate measures -- along with a few dozen other things.

I've got this same problem on seven WinXP/Pro/SP1 machines, here... I can't believe I'm the only poor persecuted soul with this difficulty... lol.

until I right-click and do a Show Image.I just noticed that it's called "show picture" in my menu. If you've been searching for "show image," maybe you should look at "show picture" "internet explorer" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&q=%22show+picture%22+%22internet+explorer%22&btnG=Search).

Yes, you're indeed correct.

Just a momentary typographical discombobulation on my part, though.

It happens a lot when you type before you think... lol.

I've got this same problem on seven WinXP/Pro/SP1 machines, here... Given that I have a hard time getting even two XP boxes to screw up the same way, I'd be looking at non-OS suspects: security software, ISP caching, routers ... something.

And find it fast, before it exceeds that pain threshold of yours -- I don't want you blowing up and taking out another bridge (http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/local/state/hc-26210223.apds.m0143.bc-ct--tankmar26,0,49378.story?coll=hc-headlines-local-wire). My commute is hairy enough as it is. the best I could come up with was hiring this lil smiley Deb's got almost as many smilies as she has pets. :P (Where's the "Help! I'm buried under six tons of furry animals" smiley?)

From http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum36/1158.htm:
I had the same problem on two different computers. Is it small graphics that are repeated on the page?
Try running a spyware removal tool and get rid of everything that shouldn't be there. That solved it on both counts for me.Hope that might help you... :dunno:

Yes, it is ONLY repeated small graphics.

I run three different crap-strippers frequently, of course -- it doesn't appear to be a scum problem.

One last shot in the dark... I noticed in Control Panel -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View there's a do not cache thumbnails option. Make sure it's unchecked.

Here's (http://www.polisource.com/states/music.html) a good page to test this on. Pleanty of little images.

Thanks, good thought -- I think maybe that's the default; the three machines I just looked at are set up that way.

I'm amazed that none of the gazillion suggestions in that Tek-Tips thread helped. (Well, no I'm not. I still don't know why some 2000/XP machines stop running scheduled tasks after the time changes -- and it's coming 'round again. Sigh.)

Have you tried altering the environment? Like, moving one of these machines outside the network, using dial-up, plugging it into grandma's T1 line...

I think I might remember the post LightGuide was thinking of. Someone complained that some of the forum buttons weren't loading. People were blaming his ISP and talking about firewalls. I think Terra joined the conversation. Something about FutureQuest preventing images from being stolen.

Things like this drive me buggy... lol... I thank you all for your kind efforts!

A little more background:

For the heck of it, I called around a half dozen clients today, and three of them reported noticing the same problem... all on WinXP/Pro.SP1.

Considering that, and that I frequently see this on every machine I have here (eleven of them, widely varied but all WinXP/Pro.SP1)... I find it difficult to call it commonplace.

There's also a setting that automatically clears the cache after every... something. Maybe you should turn that off, or on.

An unlikely solution is Task manager -> Applications -> View -> Update Speed and make it faster or slower. Maybe your computer is too fast for its own good.

If the only sites with the problem are hosted on FutureQuest, then you should blame... um... Randall.

Oh, the problem is certainly not FQ -- this occurs everywhere.

Interestingly, I've actually examined the cache. The "missing" images are there in every case I have checked.

The browser just doesn't show them.

Is this gonna become another Great Mystery like the infamous Win2K floppy disease (http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13071)? I keep hoping that I'll run across that one somewhere.

Hmmm... Y'know, if you get really desperate, I'm close enough to be a second set of eyes for you. ;)

Thanks for the offer.

You know, I think I can almost see your house from here...

I almost saidI've actually examined the cache. The "missing" images are thereThen how about trying my previous suggestion--Control Panel -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View--but check the do not cache thumbnails option so your computer won't mistakingly think it could retrieve the cached image. Then it might download each one from the server. But then I read up on what thumbnails are according to XP, so I don't think it will work.

I'd try Tip #182: Move Location of Temporary Internet Files (http://windows.about.com/library/tips/bltip182.htm).
