popups banners etc

Hi

Does anyone have any experiences/suggestions for putting banners...popups etc on a site, as a means of generating income? Before I jump in, I want a better idea of what it entails.

I personally use non offensive banners (not flashing, clashing, or jiggling) to keep the doors open on my site. In my opinion, pop ups drive people away from sites, not towards them, and are generally not well accepted. Plus, I along with many others have installed pop up blockers.
