search engine placement

What are some good resources or directions you can point me in to find out how to get on the search engines. Is this something "doable" by me, or do I need to a) buy software...like webposition, which I bought a couple of years ago but never used and now would have to buy again for updated knowledgebase...or b) outsouce to a company to do it?
I have a site that I submitted hitchwisk.com and that has been months and no indexing at all by the s.e's.
I used some stupid company to do it, trafficblazer or something, it was an add on at the check out at godaddy and for $30 it hasn't provided any help to me to get site indexed, is this a fluke or has anyone else used this service or one like it?

Basically, get listed in DMOZ and post your address where Google and other search engines will see it.

Including sections like "My web pages are not currently listed. Why?", "PageRank Information", etc.

For an additional quick review check out these Aota.net tutorials (http://www.aota.net/Promotion/index.php4) and remember to drop your link in areas that are actively being spired by the search engines (such as the link attached to the Site Owner status under your nick name in these forums) and don't forget to add the site(s) to the Net-Sleuth (http://www.net-sleuth.com/) directory as well as adding banners to Aota.net (http://www.aota.net/Promotion/freebanners.php4) ;)
