Personally, I've hired an assistant to do nothing but press the Alt-F4 keys...

If you are using Mozilla/Firebird/Phoenix/whatever-name-they-think-it-will-be-this-week

then that functionality is already built in...

Can't speak for Opera...

For IE, I find that "Pop-Up Stopper" has been working great, and it also allows for an override key when you need for something to pop-up that is legitimate (like our Smilies table in the left corner) :)

Also the Google Toolbar Beta version 2.0 (I'm not sure about other versions) has popup blocker functionality with an overide key. It works very well for me.

I'll second Terra's recommendation of PanicWare's Pop-Up Stopper. I use it and it's fantastic. The thing I like most about it is that it also kills the Windows Messenger pop-ups that had previously become the bane of my existance (you know the ones - they use Windows' built-in network messaging system to spam you).

Mozilla's built-in blocker works quite well for me, and it generally doesn't block "good" popups like the smiley window.

I have seen a few Orbitz ads slip through -- hopefully the Mozilla folks will solve that one.

I do not block pop-ups because I want to know which sites use them and how many they use so I can eliminate those most offensive links from my site. The pop up that I find most offensive is the one that asks if I want to download some file, usually Gator but there are others as well.

I'm curious to know if the blocking systems mentioned also block these download requests? My guess is they do...

I find any ad that moves or blinks offensive and some of the best sites use them.

But I am posting here mostly to pass along this link which tells how to disable IP Messaging from within the XP or W2K OS without installing an additional pop-up blocker. This comes from a site appropriately named PC Hell.

Opera allows you 4 options: Accept/Refuse/Open in Background/Open requested pop-ups only.

It can be set either in Preferences/Windows, or in Quick Preferences (F12) as a radio-button select.

I've tried a few including IE Guard and Ad Subtract Pro. The latter was the best at killing pop ups and adverts. However since it uses a proxy and my sat link also uses a proxy it would at times slow me down too much what with the sat latency.

I am using Zone Alarm Pro now and am quite happy with it.

I am happy with Googles feature on its Beta Toolbar.

I agree with Brian, I have been using the old Google toolbar for a while now and when I wanted to install it on my laptop (which now uses linux and mozilla no need to worry) saw that it had the beta with popup blocker I grabbed it immediately and installed it on both machines. 8}
