With this...

http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13882

It seems like it may be time to bring our Vbulletin up to their latest release in anticipation of their 3.0 version. The person who was doing this stuff for us has gone on to other projects and I no longer have her on board. I know everyone says it is way easy, but my learning curve is out shoveling snow for the time being.

If someone can help, please send me your rates etc. Email or PM is fine for contacting. Over the next week, phone would probably be bad as I am on the road. I would prefer not to go with vbulletin upgrade services as I have some hacks in there and it would take me too long to figure out where they are.

If you're running a pre 2.2.5 vBulletin, the only thing that I know will break with the PHP upgrade (to php newer than 4.2.0 or 4.2.1) is that vBulletin's template editor will no longer function correctly so you will no longer be able to custoimze any vBulletin templates that you have not already customized before the PHP upgrade.

With vBulletin 3.0 coming soon and if your vBulletin is heavily modified, I wonder if it is worth it to upgrade now to 2.3.0 and then redo everything again in a few weeks when 3.0 comes out or if it would be just as well to wait a few weeks and just do the 2.3.0 upgrade then (so you don't have to worry about redoing template mods and hacks) and then immediately do the 3.0 upgrade and customize from there... I don't know the answer...

well, shucks...even I surprise myself sometimes. This afternoon I managed to upgrade our forum to the latest release. To the best of my knowledge, all my hacks with the exception of one minor one (visual only) stuck and I am pretty happy (LOL...but dismayed that I actually paid someone in the past to do it!)

As you said you were on a learning curve. It was a good idea upgrading as there were a lot of security fixes.

Did you get hammered by a spam bot that was doing the rounds a month ago? If not you were lucky. :D

It was a good thing for me to do Rich. I know I had the fine folks here to fall back on with a meek, "HELP!". In addition to the security issues, the best thing was that I ended up gaining a lot of confidence for future issues/upgrades.

Not sure if we got hammered by a spam bot as no one has said anything and I am probably not as good at checking stats as I used to be. I didn't notice a significant increase in my own spam beyond those I normally get. I have spam assassin set globally but don't blackhole them because I still a rare false-positive.

If you are worried about loosing any of your hacks in future, run Beyond Compare, before each upgrade.
