View Full Version : Anyone willing to check a small attachment for me
I received an attachment in a spam and not knowing the ins and outs of my new email software led me to click on it. ~#
I think it is an Internet Explorer file and possibly one that does something to the preferences folder, but I couldn't find anything in that folder that looks as if it was changed yesterday.
I was wondering if anyone here who has a big firewall and good virus checking software installed would like to check out this little file for me and tell me what it does.
A tall request by any standards, but any brave souls out there?

If you have the attachment file name, try searching symantec's avcenter: www.symantec.com/avcenter
Thanks Hobbes. Symantec didn't seem to have any alert for the file which looks as if it is called link_homepage_exclude

A Google search doesn't find anything by that name either. Sure it was an attachment, and not a (broken) link to something?
Randall
You know Randall you might have a point there, but the mail software certainly regards it as an attachment and tells me so:
Attachments: There is 1 attachment
As a precaution I have cleared out my preferences folder for OE (not that I use it much anyway).

I vaguely remember getting mail from people who tried to send me a link to something, and for some reason it came through as an attached Windows shortcut file. It would have a .lnk extension, if your email program isn't hiding it from you.
anyone here who has a big firewall and good virus checking software installed You really ought to have both of those yourself. Lots of nasties out there, and even if you know enough not to click on strange attachments, accidents can happen -- as you just discovered. :\

Randall Now, this is a question I've been meaning to ask here for a while. How good is a router as a hard firewall?
We don't have quite the choice of virus checking software in the Mac world as there is in the Windows world, but I'd like to hear what Mac people here at FQ use for virus checking.

As a longtime Mac user, I happily can say I don't use any virus checking software. In 12-plus years, I only recall two virii that actually needed tending to. In fact, I often use my Mac to test attachments before passing them on to my PC stations.
'course, now I just jinxed myself :\
