hehe I'm just so happy now. I finally get to throw that fuzzy 800 x 600 hunk of junk in the trash http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I got a new monitor today. It's only a 14" but it was only $99 and I can see every pixel on the screen! The old one didn't have pixels - it had blurry dots that all ran together.
Besides, programming in 800 x 600 doesn't work. I still think the price was the best part.
Sorry - just a little excited about my new investment http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif I feel like I just bought a pair of glasses - everything is so clear http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif And I don't wear glasses...
Justin
HAHA I remember that feeling all too well!
It's awesome to get away from the lower resolutions http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
Enjoy it!

Justin,
1920 x 1200 resolution has to be seen to be believed http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

1024X768 on a 14in monitor?! Nothing wrong with your eyes, that's for sure!
We have 20 in ViewSonic monitors at work and they look fine at 800X600.

I hear ya...
I run 1024x768 17" monitor for my Win98/NT boxxes and a 15" monitor for my Linux box at home...
Sidenote: since Linux is mostly text mode, I use 116x50 (columns x rows) and it is awesome for coding... I highly recommend people using Linux to checkout the package SVGATextMode to reprogram for the higher resolutions... I can't help out much with it though as there are so many different video card to monitor combinations... Excercise extreme caution with this utility, because if you set your video higher than what your v/m combo can handle - you can fry the monitor... In the end - you have **direct** access to your video cards timing registers and program it to your exacting needs... Took me about a week of fiddling to get mine just right, and was well worth all the energy... 116x50 text mode rocks!

Well, if you'd seen my old 14" monitor, you'd understand! It was fuzzy as hell, and even at 640 x 480 you couldn't make out the pixels. I built my own computer a while back, and I figured I'd save money and use my old Axion monitor that came with my Packard Bell 386 SX-16 I got in 1992. hehe http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
So even on a 14" at 1024 x 768, it's a lot clearer. In Visual Basic, I have the program being worked on, plus all of my toolbars and such, and at 800 x 600 you can't work without scrolling your program window vertically and horizontally. I hate scrolling sideways http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
Now all I need is another monitor (and video card) to run dual desktop - that will rule. Web page on one, Notepad on the other, VB on one, program on other, Doom on one, Quake on other...
1920 x 1200 resolution has to be seen to be believed
Wow - that's like more than 4 800 x 600's stacked in a square... you could have 4 windows open, each equivelant to an 800 x 600 maximized screen... Holy cow!
I'm happy with my $99 monitor. Probably the cheapest you can get, probably won't last too long, but hey, it was $99! Anyone ever heard of emachines? That's the brand (reminds me of the Axion - I could never find the manufacture for that one). Oh, well, it's also got those nifty little buttons to control the width, height, linearity, etc. So I've got it maxed to the edges (unlike the old one with an inch of space on all sides...)
Ok, I go now http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Heck I am so happy to have my 17" monitor... used to work on a 14" coding html for like 10 hours then couldn't see straight for days... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

thing I dont lie about high resolutions is that the text gets reaaaaaaally small and the icons get reaally small on a 14 in - like dont yu needa magnifying glass to read at that resolution on a 14? - mines preety small at 800x 600 drives me nutty enough to stay at the lower resolution It scapable of going higher than that but I dont know how I'd ever be ab;e to see anything cuz it's all be so small

I must have good eyes, then, because I sit about 2.5 feet from the monitor and can see every pixel on the screen - they don't blend together into a big blur like the old one did. And I stare at it 16-18 hours a day.
The reason I sit back from it is that I have a couch here, and that's my desk chair. Call me lazy, but I'm comfy all day long. So in a way, I'm a couch potato http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif except I have a mouse pad on a board on the arm. Works nicely for programming all day - my back used to hurt sitting in a chair all day, so I got bored one day and rearranged my office / bedroom, putting the couch in front of the desk.
Best part is that if I get tired and don't feel like walking all the way over to the bed (4 feet away), I just crash right here http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
Oh, well, that's probably more than you wanted to hear anyway, so I'm going back to quiet mode...

I just got bored and worked it out. At .28mm dot pitch, and the monitor is 13.2" diagonally, the dots are the perfect size when there are 1024 accross and 768 up & down. That's why I can't stand 800 x 600 on this thing - at that resolution, I can see each dot distinctly, and at 640 x 480 I can see scan lines. Looks like a TV. At 1024 x 768, I can't see each dot, but I can see the edges of things nice and sharp.
BTW, couldn't find the calculator so I did that on paper. Figuring 24 mm per inch, there's about 11.5 inches accross with 1024 * .28mm dots. That means no space between them, and no overlapping either. Perfect.
I'm not doing this because I'm bored, I'm procrastinating working on the things I should be working on, like my programs. Instead, I installed Apache, put up a message board, blew up my old monitor (soldered a wire to the wrong point and blew the flyback), etc. Good thing I work for myself, or I'd have been fired long ago! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
Ok, back to work...

pssst...you should have one on the computer if you are running windows.
Don't feel bad I procrastinate like crazy too. Am right now http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

duh! I figured out the size problem witthe text being so small at high res hehehe DUH um did ya know yu can like make it bigger? naaww really? woohoo!! o this looks much better - it was good at the"crappy" setting but now it's way better - only thing is that some websites have all their content on the far left now instead of filinghte screen or ceneterd hehehe thats kinda weird
