View Full Version : My site's image is stuck on someone's desktop

Here's a strange one...

The image that sits in the upper left corner of all my site's pages has somehow become stuck on someone's desktop. They can't move it, drag it, delete it, click on it... they've tried changing their desktop's image but it just stays there right in the middle of their screen. How could this have happened? I don't know how to do something like that, so I don't know how to tell them to get rid of it.

Any ideas?

They probably accidentally right-clicked on the image and selected "Set as background"

Have they tried right-clicking on their desktop and selecting Properties. This should pop-up a dialog where they can change their background; try disabling it altogether (if they haven't been able to change it).

Depending on the OS, if they have Active Desktop then it may require some more fudging with the settings, but I can't remember what off-hand.

I have used "desktop items" and this sounded familiar...

As an experiment (using Win XP) I right clicked that image on your site and chose "set as desktop item..." Sure enough it appeared there. But unlike the experience of your visitor, when I hovered over the image a title bar with close box appeared, and when I clicked the "X," the image disappeared.

It still exists though as a "desktop item," and in order to remove it I get this instruction from XP: "...go to Control Panel and open Display. Click the Desktop tab. Click Customize Desktop. Click the Web Tab. Clear the check box of the item you want to delete."

I followed these instructions and removed the item, but I would amend that last sentence to read "check the item you want to remove and then click 'delete.'" I'm unsure why the MS instruction is unclear. ("minor bug?")

I tried to add the entire site as a "desktop item," doesn't work, I added the map as an item, but it won't work as a link to more info... But I have added this link to my site as weather info... I can't understand why it's so easy to link to web images as "desktop items," or the value of this feature. Maybe it will come to me in an MSĀ® dream.

I hope that helps though.

Thanks much, hobbes and Andi. I've forwarded the information to them. I hope it works.

Hi Joe,

Totally, completely, and utterly off-topic, but I've been wondering for a while why you pulled the capability for people to pull weather listings from weatherforyou.com for use on their own sites?

A few years ago I set up a site and used weatherforyou.com weather on it. It's still working, but when I recently went back to create another one for a new site I'm working on, the option is gone from your site.

weatherforyou.com has the absolute best weather listings of any of the weather sites I've found, so I was obviously disappointed. I'm just curious as to why you pulled it.

Thanks,

Jason

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the compliments. :o

I didn't completely get rid of the images for other sites, but slowed down adding new subscribers while I resolved some issues. And now I'm in the process of improving them. They're still available for the asking, especially for current users (and my FutureQuest neighbors). Drop me an e-mail and I'll send you the link to make new images for your site.
